I love staying in historic hotels and I wanted to love the Menger but it wasn’t good. The building itself is very historic, beautiful and in a fantastic location. Staff aren’t very welcoming. I stayed in a petite room (4069)which was fine for just me and my son but there were issues. The shower hot water handle leaks which made the handle itself very hot to turn off. I had to use a towel and all my strength to turn it fully off. The bed was very uncomfortable. I felt every spring in the mattress. The pillows were too firm. I stayed a weekend and didn’t sleep well at all. Woke up with neck and back pain. Not to mention it was so hot in the room. I read in the reviews you can request a fan which I did but it didn’t help much. The walls are also pretty thin but luckily the noise from the fan masked a lot of the noise caused by the people next door. I did get the room at a great price for downtown but I think I would rather spend the extra money to stay elsewhere. Oh and the pool was disgustingly. My son was disappointed we couldn’t use it.

We enjoyed the hotel overall. It’s dated but pretty. The room had a nice big fan and was cool. We booked a queen bed and I think it was not a standard queen if it was a queen. Very cozy! The water pressure was pretty rough but I do sort of expect that in an old hotel. My only real complaint is that there are basically NO toiletries-not even bar soap. We got one small body wash container that looked like it had been used previously. I brought most of my own stuff so it was okay but I had to use my personal body wash for hand soap. Even Motel 6 provides soaps! Otherwise we had a lovely stay and the location can’t be beat.

For the age and historic stature of the hotel, staff should be nicer and more inviting. This is a beautiful property. Effort would and could elevate it to close to a 4 star experience. Sadly, We experienced bad food and became ill after the meal, spoke to a manager, and never got a call back to resolve the issue. Extremely disappointing. Used to come here as a child it was an adventure. Wish that was more common now. Prior to that experience, I would have given the hotel, a three star, despite the dismal service and the requirement that you book your room online through another company. The decor is amazing. Some of the staff are fun to talk with because they know the history. But overall, I have received better service at Motel 6. You can’t beat the location. It is fantastic. But given the choice, I will choose the Crockett next time and I have stayed at the Menger three times out of the last six weeks traveling to San Antonio. Every two weeks part of this is because I spent my childhood staying at the Menger and wanted to introduce my family to the same experience. If you just want to visit a historic hotel, I would highly recommend this hotel but know that the staff is just there for a job or at least that is how it seems. On our last visit, we actually did get someone that corrected an issue but still did not address our prior visit. Sadly, three times tired of us out. The hotel is beautiful and honestly, it is worth the visit. Just fatiguing if you go back several times and that’s a shame.

Mixed bag. The room, and I assume most rooms at this hotel had issues. They are small, probably because rooms used to be small and it's an old hotel. The mattress was not comfortable, I actually woke up sore. No plushness at all. Felt like my old twin bed from my childhood. The worse part though is taking a shower. You simply cannot get consistent temperature at all. It jumps from extreme heat to cold and back and forth rapidly and constantly. I spoke with other couples staying there and everyone said the same thing. It's that bad. The Air Conditioning.... We couldn't get the room cooler than 76 degrees. Was told to restart the thermostat but playing with that didn't accomplish anything. That's not a great temp.... The hotel is charming and quaint. It has two inner courtyards, one with the pool that was packed with what I imagine was some school's traveling group of students, but that's just how timing goes I guess. The other courtyard is wonderfully peaceful and lovely with it's landscaping, perfect for a quiet moment reading a book or contemplating the universe. Wonderfully done throughout the lobby and whatnot. Service... Justin(?), not positive on the name, who checked us in was great, the right mix of friendly and professional. Whoever the lady was during the daytime, on the other hand was abrupt with everyone. Location.... Right next to the Alamo, and you can also walk out the door to a Starbucks next door, or a 5 minute walk and be at the Riverwalk or the mall. Great location. All things considered, I would not stay there again. It needs major updating.

Room was great, with amazing history. Would loved.to hv purchased a tshirt from gift shop but the close early and open late. History behind the bar at this hotel is pretty cool, but the"bar food" was the only thing available on the dance were there and it was easy microwave food, so that was a bummer. Bar drinks were simple and had read that the margaritas were amazing before landing here. We purchased two, one for each of us. I can say that I've had much better...
