Newport Landing provides multiple whale watching and dolphin cruises daily year round aboard our specifically built-for-whale-watching ships, the Ocean Explorer and the Legacy. Our cruises depart from Newport Harbor in Newport Beach. Newport Harbor is the closest ocean harbor from Anaheim (about 20 minutes) and is surrounded by the famous coastlines of Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. On one of our whale watching cruises you can expect to see dolphins, sea lions, marine birds and, of course, whales. The winter and spring months bring the annual grey whale migration with over 10,000 gray whales participating and the summer and fall months, giant blue whales which migrate into the coastal waters in the hundreds to feed. Along with gray whales and blue whales, see humpback whales, minke whales, finback whales, and many species of dolphin year round. Over 2800 whales were viewed in 2015! Why are there some many whales just outside of Newport Harbor? The answer is the unique marine ecosystem which brings nutrient rich waters very close to shore. The unique ecosystem is so special that a 15 mile state marine protected park was created in 2012 to ensure this rich environment remains for generations to come. My son, nephews and I had a blast on the Western Pride with the crew from Davey’s Locker. Lots of tangles on a pretty full boat with a very broad range of fishing experience as one would expect. But the crew was all over it. We limited out and ate some pretty good food from the galley to boot. On the ride out and back to fishing we saw a Mola Mola, seals and sea lions, maybe a mako shark? Overall have to say we had an awesome time!
This was the highlight of my trip! We saw so many dolphins and a whale multiple times! Loved the ladies that took us out. Highly recommend! We will definitely do this one again. The boat was like a giant sturdy raft so we sat lower to the ocean. And it doesn’t hold less people which is great! We were able to move around! Just fyi you may want to have a towel handy we got soaked but it was worth every minute!
We had an amazing trip this morning on the 10:00 tour. The staff were very professional and knowledgeable and the boat appeared to be taken care of very well Lloyd. Although we weren't able to have a whale encounter today we did find ourselves in a pod of 500+ Common Dolphin. It was amazing to see so many of them. Luckily, there are still some examples of healthy ocean life in our world.
Our family have a fantastic time on our whale watching cruise! Parking was a pain, but make sure you call them directly and they will tell you where to park. Booking was easy and we paid Some of our tickets with a rebooking code that was given after part of our family went on a whale watching tour with them, but were not able to actually see a whale. It’s really helpful they have that policy, but it’s important to know it does cost a little bit more money to rebook. The rebooking cost was nearly as much as the normal ticket price but be aware of that and make sure to keep an eye on the time you’re rebooking for because it’s different prices, depending on the timing. The boat was clean and seating was optimal as it wasn’t as crowded since we went during the middle of the week, which was not as busy. We sat on the top deck, which was definitely worth it. We had a great view of everything. If you’re at Homeschool family with charter funding, it’s good to know you can pay for this type of activity usually out of educational funds. We did get to see a huge whale that breached about four or five times before it deep dived. We were all thrilled to have such a great whale watching tour with our family!
We had a lot of fun on our 6pm Sunday cruise. The captain and the staff were friendly and professional. Our captain, she got us up close to the dolphins. We’ve never seen so many dolphins before. It was amazing. We can’t wait to come back!
