Richard Sprague6 months agoPraised by my mainland Chinese friends as one of the most authentic spots in the Eastside area, after finally visiting, I agree. Warning: Skip this place if your benchmark for Chinese food is Panda Express-style Americanized dishes. This is the real deal. We ordered the 三杯鸡 (sān bēi jī) – Three-Cup Chicken – and it was spot-on: rich basil-garlic-sesame aroma, tender meat on the bone, exactly as it should be in a proper Taiwanese kitchen. The owner is Taiwanese, which clearly shows in the execution. Service was impeccable – attentive without hovering, and the dining room was packed almost entirely with Chinese customers (I counted only one other non-Chinese table), always a strong authenticity signal. Only minor disappointment: the steamed rice came out a bit soggy, likely because we arrived late after the busy lunch rush when they were probably scraping the bottom of the batch. Everything else was excellent. If you're serious about authentic Chinese/Taiwanese food in the Newcastle area, this is a must-try. Highly recommended.
Alex Nguyen7 months agoGood place to get large portion sizes of Chinese lunch specials! Quick and friendly service. Well, it’s not the best lunch special that I’ve had, they do give big portion sizes, it is a bit on the sweeter side, the chicken with cashew tasted like teriyaki. Overall great spot.
w la year agoI've never physically been to Yea's Wok, but my sister had brought home food for me many times. We came here for dinner at 5:30pm and there was plenty of seats, but filled up real fast. My sister usually comes with a friend, so she didn't know there was a second room around the corner that have tables for large parties. We were seated immediately and provided tea - Jasmine is the only option they have. Also, they charge for tea. The bill showed $5 next to the Chinese words for "no rice" (we didn't order rice), so I thought they charged for not getting rice! - no, it was for the tea, which was on a different line. The tea was good and we had several refills of the carafe. $5 for 5 people is not bad. The food came quickly and my elderly Chinese dad was able to pick out 2 dishes on the "Chinese only" menu that were not shown on the English menu - jellyfish and beef tendon. Both cold dishes and pretty tasty. Overall, the food was quite tasty and you get a good portion. The service was EXCELLENT. I was clumsy and dropped a chopstick and one of the waitresses grabbed me a pair right away! The total after tips came out to $172, so about $34/person. A bit hard on the wallet, but they do have a bunch of servers/attendants to assist with your needs right away (dropped chopsticks and tea refills!), and the food is pretty delicious. I would definitely recommend Yea's Wok 葉家園.
A C H9 months agoTasty. I didn’t look Chinese enough to them therefore no Chinese menu was offered. No biggie but I saw what I wanted to try from other patron’s table. It’s likely called Hakka stir fry. The orange chicken was tasty however dark meat was used, therefore hubs wasn’t completely satisfied. Of course will come back again. Go before busy dinner crowd arrive, between 4-5pm.
Martin Messaha year agoWent here with a large group on Sunday for lunch. Had to wait a little bit but was seated within 20 min or so. Parking was easy since they are located inside a strip mall area. The place was busy and there was a small line of people waiting to be seated when we went there. Overall, service was great and the servers were attentive. Prices are fair and the portion sizes are quite big. We ordered a few dishes and a soup dish that wasn't on the picture. Food taste okay, not amazing. We liked the honey walnut prawns, Mongolian beef, and the string beans. The rest was just okay. They don't have chili oil here, only sambal oelek for hot sauce. They serve tea as well with the water which was nice. I would recommend visiting this if you have a large group and are in the area. I don't think it's worth a drive just to try this place out.
