About this venue

Opened in 1946, Casa Rio is the oldest restaurant on the River Walk and was modeled after the very first true Tex-Mex restaurant in the entire country which opened in 1899 and went out of business in 1960. We now carry on the tradition of serving the “Regular Plate” which consists of a cheese enchilada, Mexican rice, refried beans, a tamale, and our famous Chili con Carne. This was created as a sampler plate so our visitors could try a little bit of everything. The chili is unique to our community because it is based on a recipe used by the “Chili Queens” in the late 1800s. The Chili Queens would serve visiting military and cowboys their famous chunk meat chili doused in all sorts of spices in the nearby Alamo Plaza. Next time you visit the San Antonio River Walk, don’t miss out on this staple dining experience, underneath the famous umbrellas!

A wonderful piece of San Antonio History. The service from the street to the table was fabulous. They made us feel right at home. The food was really good. I particularly loved the Chilli. The price for lunch was very reasonable. In many ways this family owned restaurant is responsible for the River Walk as we know it today.

We tried this restaurant because it was well known and the first restaurant on the San Antonio River Walk. There was a long line, but they were pushing people through quickly so we didn’t have to wait more than 20 minutes. There was an outside bar to get a drink while waiting. The food was just okay and the service was extremely slow. As soon as we received the food the wait staff disappeared and when they reappeared, they came with the check and was eager for us to leave.

We had dinner inside. The food was delicious. The service was very good, especially as they were very busy. We were told we had a wait of over an hour, but we got in in about 20 minutes. On the inside, I liked the rock walls and low ceilings, however, I feel the decor could be more festive. It was kinda plain, but would definitely eat here again. The prices were very good for the Riverwalk.

Casa Rio is one of the more touristy spots on the San Antonio River Walk, but it was convenient to my hotel and the riverside location is definitely appealing. They also offer dinner cruises on the river, which adds to the experience for visitors. I sat outside right along the water, and the atmosphere was enjoyable overall. The biggest downside was the birds constantly hovering around and even stealing food from tables, which became pretty disruptive during the meal. The food itself was hit or miss. The spicy margarita was decent but nothing memorable. The chili con carne was actually very good — flavorful with generous chunks of meat. Unfortunately, the tacos lacked flavor and the corn tortillas were just average. One bright spot was the service, which was excellent from start to finish. Overall, while the setting is nice and the location is convenient, the food didn’t stand out enough compared to all the other River Walk options. I’d probably skip Casa Rio next time.

We had lunch at Casa Rio while exploring the San Antonio River Walk, and it was one of those meals where the atmosphere was just as memorable as the food. The photos don't really do it justice. We had beautiful weather, colorful umbrellas overhead, and a perfect view of the boats passing by on the river. Sitting outside and enjoying the scenery made the whole experience feel like a classic San Antonio afternoon. The food was good, the service was friendly, and I really enjoyed taking a break from exploring to relax along the water. One thing I thought was especially interesting is that Casa Rio was the first restaurant to open on the River Walk, so you're dining at a place that's been part of San Antonio's history for generations. It definitely adds to the experience. If you're already spending the day on the River Walk, Casa Rio is a great place to slow down, enjoy the atmosphere, and take in one of the city's most iconic views.
