glacier ca month agoMyself and my two teenage sons went on the First Thursday in July 2026. I haven't been here in 18 years. It's still as good as it ever was. I didn't realize all the amazing things that are on the top floor, which is Northwest surrealism and European paintings (at the time of this post). Both some of my faves and much easier for the teens to get into. I wish I had known and started from the top and worked my way down. (we ran out of time on this visit so I was racing through the top floor😕) That said I REALLY enjoyed everything I saw and even though it was the First Thursday, and summer to boot, so it's fairly crowded, it was still manageable. I would highly recommend anyone who lives in Seattle or is visiting Seattle to visit this museum. In the pictures I attached, the one with the red and black, when I walked into that room and saw it, it's like seven feet tall and very dramatic. I literally stopped in my tracks and said, "Wow." The image I attached, showing a painting of water going over rocks, that is watercolor. 1940. It is unbelievable. I'll be going back for August's First Thursday so I can more slowly go through the top floor
Nami Na month agoFascinating exhibitions that push the boundaries of materials! I recently visited SAM and was deeply impressed by the diversity of their current galleries. The contrast between Goya’s historical prints and the massive modern sculptures was striking. The highlights for me were the contemporary pieces—seeing how artists transformed things like aromatic cedar, plastic film, and discarded electronics into powerful, jaw-dropping statements was unforgettable. The museum’s deep-colored walls also make the artwork and golden frames pop beautifully. Highly recommend taking your time to look closely at the details here!
Florin Armasu2 months agoVisited on a Saturday morning and it was the right call. The collection is unusually blended: 3000 BC Egyptian pieces a few rooms away from Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy. What makes it work is the curatorial choice to organize by gesture, emotion, and the artifacts of inner and outer human life rather than strictly by period or region. It produces unexpected pairings that reward slow looking. The lobby had a live performance with an artist playing hands and synthesizer, and a wave of fifty or more kids running through with much more interest in playing than in the art on the walls. That was its own kind of artistic expression and exactly the right energy for a Saturday museum. SAM clearly designs for it. Practical kindness worth mentioning: they validated parking, which matters in downtown Seattle and signals the museum understands its city. Strong recommendation for anyone visiting Seattle for the first time or returning. Plan around two hours minimum. Bring curiosity, exploration and let yourself be guided in a different way than just chronologically and by style in a cleverly curated highly stimulative museum. Excellent work SAM!
Anne Nguyen2 months agoThe museums in Seattle are definitely places worth visiting when exploring this city. We spent quite a lot of time here, and looking back, it would have been even better if we had arrived in the morning so we could have had more time to fully appreciate the collections and artworks. I especially enjoyed the sculptures, from classical pieces to modern works. The staff were thoughtful and helpful, and there is also a bag storage service available, which makes it much more comfortable to explore at your own pace.
G Mac2 months agoThis is a stunning museum. It has a very broad and deep collection of art from Europe, America, and even Australia. The works are wonderfully displayed and include fantastic contemporary works and masters like Rothko, Monet and Pissaro scattered throughout the gallery. The gift shop is amazing and has beautiful and unusual items, including the usual cards books and souvenirs. Attached to this is a gallery where you can buy works as well as rent them. I must see when in Seattle.
