How they're improving

Establish Comprehensive Green Building Certification Program: Develop a destination-wide initiative requiring all new event-related construction and major renovations to achieve LEED Gold or Platinum certification by 2027. Partner with the U.S. Green Building Council to create a 'Raleigh Green Venue Certification' that goes beyond LEED to include event-specific sustainability metrics. Action: Create financial incentives (tax credits, expedited permitting) for venues achieving certification and mandate renewable energy use of at least 50% for all certified facilities. Example: Follow Austin Convention Center's model which achieved LEED Gold and reduced energy consumption by 35% through solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and smart building systems. Measurable Outcome: Achieve 80% of event venues with green certification within 3 years, reduce collective energy consumption by 30%, and generate 40% of venue energy from renewable sources.
Launch Zero-Waste Event Initiative with Measurable Targets: Create a comprehensive zero-waste program for business events with mandatory participation for all city-owned venues and incentives for private facilities. Action: Implement standardized composting and recycling infrastructure across all event spaces, ban single-use plastics destination-wide by 2025, and establish partnerships with local organizations for food donation and waste-to-energy programs. Require all catering services to source 75% of ingredients from within 150 miles and provide plant-based menu options as defaults. Example: Model after Vancouver's Zero Waste 2040 strategy which diverted 65% of waste from landfills and saved venues an average of $50,000 annually through reduced waste hauling costs. Measurable Outcome: Achieve 90% waste diversion rate for business events within 2 years, eliminate 500,000 pounds of single-use plastics annually, and increase local food sourcing by 60%.
Develop Community Impact Measurement and Reporting Framework: Create a transparent system to track and publicly report the economic, social, and environmental impact of business events on local communities. Action: Establish baseline metrics for local business participation, job creation, minority/women-owned business engagement, and community benefit hours from events. Require all major conventions to commit to minimum community engagement activities (volunteer hours, local hiring, educational partnerships) and publish annual impact reports. Partner with NC State University to develop a 'Community Impact Score' for events. Example: Follow Philadelphia's model which requires major events to demonstrate 30% local business participation and has generated over $100 million in contracts for minority-owned businesses. Measurable Outcome: Increase local business participation in event supply chain to 65% within 3 years, create 500 new hospitality jobs annually with living wages, and generate 10,000 community service hours from event attendees.

Raleigh receives a score of 72/100 for Walkability and Urban Mobility. Pedestrian Infrastructure (22/30): The downtown core demonstrates strong pedestrian infrastructure with wide sidewalks, clearly marked crosswalks, and pedestrian-friendly areas along Fayetteville Street and the warehouse district. The convention center area and government complex feature ADA-compliant curb cuts and pedestrian signals. However, the city remains largely car-dependent outside the urban core, with suburban sprawl limiting walkability. The 100+ miles of greenway trails, while extensive, serve primarily recreational rather than practical transportation purposes. Urban Mobility Options (16/25): Limited information provided about bike-sharing, scooter-sharing, or micro-mobility solutions. The text mentions GoRaleigh public transit with wheelchair-accessible options but lacks details on alternative mobility services, suggesting moderate availability of urban mobility options beyond traditional transit. City Layout and Walkable Zones (18/25): Downtown Raleigh offers concentrated walkability between venues, restaurants, and accommodations in the convention center district. The Research Triangle location and complete streets policies show commitment to improvement. However, many business districts, hotels, and attractions are spread across suburban areas requiring vehicle transportation, indicating a mixed-use layout that limits comprehensive walkability. Local Tips for Getting Around (16/20): The destination provides clear information about safe, well-traveled areas (downtown, North Hills, NC State University vicinity) and areas requiring caution. Accessibility information is comprehensive, with details on ADA-compliant facilities, accessible transportation, and venue features. The strategic location and highway access information helps visitors navigate the broader region.

How they're improving

Expand Practical Greenway Connections: Convert recreational greenway trails into functional transportation corridors by adding wayfinding signage, lighting, and direct connections between hotels, convention venues, and business districts. Implement dedicated greenway segments linking the Greater Raleigh Convention Center to major hotel clusters within 2 miles, similar to Indianapolis's Cultural Trail. Measure success by tracking pedestrian usage increases of 40% within 18 months and surveying event attendees on greenway utilization. 2. Implement Comprehensive Micro-Mobility Network: Launch integrated bike-sharing and e-scooter programs throughout downtown and convention districts, with dedicated stations at the convention center, major hotels, and transit hubs. Partner with providers like Lime or Bird to deploy 500+ vehicles within a 3-mile radius of downtown, following Nashville's successful downtown mobility zone model. Establish protected bike lanes on key corridors connecting venues. Target 25% of event attendees using micro-mobility options for at least one trip, measured through user data and attendee surveys. 3. Create Downtown Pedestrian Priority Zones: Expand car-free or car-limited zones beyond Fayetteville Street to include additional blocks around the convention center during major events. Install enhanced pedestrian infrastructure including wider sidewalks, countdown crossing signals, mid-block crossings, and weather protection canopies between venues, similar to Denver's 16th Street Mall corridor. Implement temporary street closures for large conventions. Measure pedestrian volume increases of 30% and reduction in vehicle-pedestrian conflicts by 50% within two years. 4. Develop Integrated Mobility Information Platform: Create a comprehensive digital wayfinding app and physical signage system providing real-time information on walking routes, transit options, bike-share availability, and estimated travel times between venues. Include accessibility features, safety information, and integration with GoRaleigh transit schedules, modeled after San Diego's Smart City initiative. Distribute to all convention attendees and measure adoption rates of 60%+ and user satisfaction scores above 4.2/5.0. 5. Strengthen First-Mile/Last-Mile Connections: Establish dedicated shuttle circuits connecting outlying hotels and suburban business districts to the walkable downtown core at 15-minute intervals during business hours and events. Create park-and-walk facilities at downtown periphery with clear pedestrian routes to convention center. Implement on-demand micro-transit service for areas beyond fixed routes, similar to Arlington's Via rideshare program. Target reducing car dependency for suburban-to-downtown trips by 35% and measure through parking utilization data and attendee transportation surveys.

How they're improving

While Raleigh demonstrates strong accessibility infrastructure in major venues and business facilities, the destination should focus on enhancing information accessibility and expanding accessible infrastructure beyond core downtown areas to achieve outstanding performance.

Develop a comprehensive digital accessibility platform that includes an interactive accessible tourism website with detailed accessibility information for all venues, hotels, restaurants, and attractions. This platform should feature searchable accessibility attributes (wheelchair access, sensory accommodations, service animal policies), downloadable accessible guides in multiple formats (large print, audio, screen-reader compatible), and real-time updates on accessibility conditions. Barcelona's Accessible Tourism Guide serves as an excellent model, providing detailed accessibility ratings and user reviews that help travelers plan their visits with confidence.
Implement a citywide accessible wayfinding system that extends beyond major venues to include downtown sidewalks, public spaces, and business districts. Install tactile paving at crosswalks, audio signals at pedestrian crossings, and accessible signage with Braille and high-contrast text throughout key business areas. Conduct accessibility audits of sidewalks and public pathways to identify and remediate gaps in curb cuts, surface conditions, and obstacle-free routes between hotels, convention facilities, and dining districts.
Establish an Accessible Business Events Certification Program for hotels, venues, restaurants, and service providers that goes beyond basic ADA compliance. Create tiered certification levels that recognize excellence in accessibility features, staff training, and inclusive practices. Provide training workshops and resources to help businesses achieve certification, and prominently feature certified providers in marketing materials and on the digital accessibility platform. Melbourne's Accessible Tourism Accreditation Program demonstrates how such initiatives can drive industry-wide improvements while giving planners confidence in service quality.
Expand accessible transportation options by increasing the frequency and coverage of wheelchair-accessible shuttles connecting major business districts, hotels, and the airport. Partner with ride-sharing services to guarantee accessible vehicle availability during major conventions and events. Create a dedicated accessible transportation concierge service that event planners can coordinate with to ensure seamless mobility for attendees with special needs throughout their stay.
Launch an Accessibility Ambassador Program that trains frontline tourism and hospitality staff as specialized accessibility experts. These ambassadors should receive advanced training in disability awareness, assistive technology use, and inclusive communication practices. Position ambassadors at key locations during major events to provide on-the-ground support, answer questions, and facilitate problem-solving for attendees with accessibility needs, ensuring that Raleigh's commitment to inclusivity is visible and actionable throughout the visitor experience.
