Extensive signage in multiple languages and the city's systematic approach to pedestrian prioritization provide clear guidance. Local DMO support helps planners identify accessibility features, though more detailed micro-mobility guidance could enhance the score further.

How they're improving

Enhance Micro-Mobility Documentation and Integration: Develop comprehensive information materials detailing bike-sharing stations, scooter-sharing zones, and micro-mobility options specifically for business event attendees. Create a dedicated digital map showing all mobility hubs near major venues (Cité des Congrès de Nantes), hotels, and business districts. Measurable outcome: Increase micro-mobility usage among event attendees by 25% within 12 months through enhanced awareness and accessibility information. 2. Expand the Ligne Verte Concept for Business Districts: Extend the successful Ligne Verte wayfinding system with a dedicated 'Business Event Route' connecting convention centers, major hotels, and corporate venues. Use distinct color coding (e.g., blue line) and include QR codes at intervals providing multilingual audio guides and estimated walking times. Example: Melbourne's 'Golden Mile Heritage Trail' combines physical markers with digital content. Measurable outcome: Reduce first-time visitor navigation confusion by 40% and increase inter-venue walking by 30% as measured through attendee surveys. 3. Create Evening Safety Walking Corridors: Establish well-lit, clearly marked 'Safe Walking Routes' connecting event venues to hotel clusters, particularly addressing evening navigation concerns in peripheral areas near Gare Nord. Measurable outcome: Increase attendee confidence in evening walking by 35% and reduce reliance on taxis for short distances by 20% through post-event surveys. 4. Develop a Comprehensive Business Event Mobility App: Launch a dedicated mobile application integrating the Ligne Verte, real-time public transport, bike-sharing availability, accessible route planning, and venue-specific walking directions. Include offline functionality and personalized itinerary planning based on event schedules. Example: Singapore's 'MyTransport' app provides integrated multi-modal journey planning. Measurable outcome: Achieve 70% adoption rate among event attendees within 18 months and reduce transportation-related inquiries to event organizers by 50%. 5. Strengthen Pedestrian Connectivity to Waterfront Venues: Enhance walking routes along the Loire, Erdre, and Sèvre Nantaise rivers with dedicated business event signage, rest areas with charging stations, and weather-protected walkways connecting waterfront event spaces. The text specifically mentions accessible business events and venues for professionals with disabilities. The ongoing airport expansion and modernization will further enhance business travel accessibility.

How they're improving

While Nantes demonstrates strong accessibility infrastructure and inclusive practices scoring 82/100, the destination should prioritize enhancing information accessibility and expanding specialized business services to achieve outstanding performance. Key improvement recommendations include:

Develop a comprehensive digital accessibility platform: Create a dedicated, WCAG 2.1 AA-compliant accessibility portal on the destination website featuring interactive maps showing accessible routes, detailed venue accessibility audits with photos and videos, real-time public transport accessibility updates, and downloadable guides in multiple formats (large print, audio, easy-read). Barcelona's 'Accessible Tourism' portal serves as an excellent model, providing filterable searches by specific accessibility needs and user reviews from travelers with disabilities.
Implement an accessibility certification program for business venues: Establish a tiered accessibility certification system for hotels, conference centers, and event spaces, similar to Singapore's 'Accessibility Mark' scheme. Conduct third-party audits assessing not just compliance but excellence in areas such as staff training, assistive technology availability, and inclusive design. Publicly recognize certified venues through a searchable database, incentivizing continuous improvement and providing event planners with confidence in venue selection.
Expand physical accessibility in the Île de Nantes regeneration areas: While ongoing urban development prioritizes universal design, accelerate the installation of accessible wayfinding systems with tactile maps, audio beacons, and high-contrast signposting throughout the creative quarter and business districts. Pilot a program similar to London's 'Legible London' system, specifically adapted for business travelers, with clear accessibility information at key decision points and integration with mobile navigation apps.
Create specialized business support services for delegates with accessibility needs: Establish a dedicated accessibility concierge service operating through the DMO, offering pre-arrival consultations, personalized accessibility itineraries, coordination of specialized equipment rental (hearing loops, mobility aids, assistive technology), and on-site support during major conferences. Vienna's 'Business Accessibility Service' demonstrates how such dedicated support increases delegate satisfaction and positions the destination as truly inclusive, leading to repeat business and positive word-of-mouth within the accessible tourism market.
