Connectivity

Johnson City, Tennessee receives a connectivity score of 68/100 for business travelers. International Airport Connectivity (18/30): Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) is a regional facility 10 minutes from downtown offering connecting flights through Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, and United. International travelers must connect through major gateways like Charlotte Douglas (CLT, 2 hours away) or Nashville International (BNA, 3 hours away) for direct international routes to Europe, Canada, and Mexico. While TRI offers efficiency with shorter security lines and quick baggage claim, the requirement for connections limits direct international accessibility. Domestic Airport and Rail Connectivity (16/25): TRI provides non-stop flights to key hubs including Atlanta, Charlotte, and Orlando with multiple daily departures, enabling one-connection access to most U.S. cities. McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Knoxville (110 miles away) offers additional domestic options. However, Johnson City lacks active passenger rail service; the historic train depot no longer operates Amtrak routes, with nearest stations in Bristol, VA (25 miles) and Greeneville, TN, significantly limiting rail connectivity to major business hubs. Public Transportation Systems (16/25): Johnson City Transit (JCT) operates fixed bus routes Monday-Saturday with modern, ADA-compliant buses featuring bike racks and real-time tracking. Routes connect downtown, East Tennessee State University, medical facilities, and shopping centers. However, the absence of metro or tram systems and limited Saturday service (no Sunday service) restricts comprehensive public transit coverage compared to major business destinations. Alternative Transportation Options (18/20): The city excels in alternative options with Uber and Lyft ride-sharing, traditional taxi services, bike rentals, hotel shuttles, and car rental services at TRI and downtown locations. Downtown's compact, walkable core features well-maintained sidewalks, marked crosswalks, ADA-compliant curb cuts, pedestrian-activated signals, and wayfinding signage connecting venues, hotels, and dining within the revitalized Main Street area, though areas outside downtown require vehicle transportation.

How they're improving

Expand Direct Flight Routes and International Gateway Partnerships: Partner with Tri-Cities Airport and airlines to establish additional non-stop routes to major business hubs (Dallas, Chicago, Denver) and strengthen shuttle/connection services to Charlotte and Nashville international gateways. Implement dedicated business traveler packages with guaranteed connection times and luggage transfer services similar to Portland International Jetport's partnership programs. Measurable Outcome: Increase non-stop destinations from 3 to 6-8 cities within 24 months, reducing average connection time for international travelers by 30%. 2. Establish Regional Rail Feasibility Study and Interim Bus Rapid Transit: Advocate for Amtrak service restoration or regional rail connecting Johnson City to Knoxville, Charlotte, and Bristol, modeling successful initiatives like the Piedmont Service in North Carolina. As an interim solution, implement Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors with dedicated lanes connecting TRI airport, downtown, ETSU, and medical district with 15-minute frequencies during business hours, similar to Cleveland's HealthLine. Measurable Outcome: Complete feasibility study within 18 months; launch BRT pilot route within 36 months serving 2,000+ daily riders. 3. Extend Public Transportation Hours and Coverage: Expand Johnson City Transit to seven-day operation with extended evening hours (until 10 PM weekdays, 8 PM weekends) and increase route frequency to 30-minute intervals on primary corridors during business hours. Add express routes connecting TRI airport directly to downtown hotels and convention venues, mirroring successful models like Raleigh's GoRaleigh system. Measurable Outcome: Achieve 40% increase in ridership within 12 months; establish 24/7 airport shuttle service serving major events. 4. Develop Integrated Mobility Hub and Digital Platform: Create a centralized mobility hub at the historic train depot featuring bike-sharing stations (50+ bikes), electric scooter rentals, car-sharing services, and real-time transit information displays. Launch a unified mobile app integrating JCT bus tracking, ride-sharing, bike-sharing, and parking availability similar to Helsinki's Whim platform or Denver's Transit app. Measurable Outcome: Deploy 10 mobility hubs across downtown and key venues within 24 months; achieve 10,000+ app downloads with 60% active monthly users. 5. Expand Pedestrian Infrastructure Beyond Downtown Core: Extend walkable infrastructure by adding 5+ miles of protected sidewalks, pedestrian bridges, and multi-use paths connecting downtown to outlying hotels, venues, and attractions. Implement wayfinding signage network and pedestrian lighting improvements along key corridors to medical district and university areas, following successful models like Chattanooga's Riverwalk expansion. Measurable Outcome: Increase pedestrian accessibility radius from 0.5 miles to 2 miles from downtown core; achieve 25% increase in walkability scores within 36 months.

Sustainability

Johnson City, Tennessee receives a sustainability score of 72/100 for business event destinations. CRITERION 1 - Sustainable Infrastructure and Green Buildings (30%): Score 20/30. Johnson City demonstrates moderate progress with green building standards in downtown revitalization and adaptive reuse projects, solar installations at municipal facilities, comprehensive stormwater management systems, and energy-efficient lighting in venues. The city has upgraded fiber optic infrastructure and developed the Founders Park complex with modern facilities. However, specific green certifications for event venues are not detailed, and renewable energy adoption appears limited to select municipal facilities rather than widespread implementation across the business events infrastructure. CRITERION 2 - Eco-friendly Event and Business Services (25%): Score 18/25. The destination shows solid commitment through comprehensive recycling and composting programs at venues, partnerships with regional food suppliers for sustainable catering emphasizing locally-sourced seasonal ingredients, digital communication tools to minimize paper waste, and the walkable downtown district with 30+ mile greenway system reducing transportation emissions. Several venues are pursuing green building certifications, though specific certifications achieved are not documented. CRITERION 3 - Community and Economic Impact Programs (25%): Score 20/25. Johnson City excels in this area with strong local economic circulation through Convention and Visitors Bureau partnerships, support for small businesses and employment creation, workforce development programs in hospitality, collaboration with East Tennessee State University for professional development, promotion of locally-sourced products for events, support for local agriculture through farmers markets and farm-to-table initiatives, and preservation of local character while ensuring tourism benefits all residents. CRITERION 4 - Long-term Sustainability Investments (20%): Score 14/20. The city demonstrates commitment through extensive trail systems (30+ mile Tweetsie Trail) promoting active transportation, downtown revitalization with sustainability standards, renewable energy infrastructure at municipal facilities, sustainable tourism development supporting regional food economy, and healthcare/educational infrastructure investments. However, strategic long-term sustainability planning and future-focused environmental targets are not explicitly articulated.

How they're improving

ESTABLISH COMPREHENSIVE GREEN CERTIFICATION PROGRAM FOR EVENT VENUES: Develop a destination-wide initiative to achieve LEED certification for at least 5 major event venues within 3 years, including the Carnegie Hotel conference center, Founders Park event spaces, and Martin Center for the Arts. Partner with the U.S. Green Building Council to provide technical assistance and financial incentives for venues pursuing certification. Example: Austin, Texas achieved LEED certification for its convention center, reducing energy consumption by 35% and attracting 20% more environmentally-conscious events. Measurable outcome: Achieve 60% of meeting space square footage in certified green buildings by 2027, track energy reduction of 25-30% across certified venues, and increase sustainable event bookings by 40%. 2. EXPAND RENEWABLE ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE ACROSS HOSPITALITY SECTOR: Create a public-private partnership to install solar panels on hotel rooftops and major event facilities, targeting 50% renewable energy generation for the business events sector within 5 years. Leverage Tennessee Valley Authority programs and state incentives to subsidize installations. Example: San Diego's convention center installed a 1.2 MW solar array generating 30% of facility energy needs, saving $11 million over 20 years. Establish a renewable energy purchasing cooperative for smaller venues. Measurable outcome: Generate 5 MW of solar capacity across event venues, reduce carbon emissions by 3,000 metric tons annually, and achieve cost savings of $500,000+ yearly for participating venues. 3. LAUNCH ZERO-WASTE EVENT CERTIFICATION AND SUPPORT PROGRAM: Develop a destination-specific zero-waste event certification program providing planners with comprehensive waste diversion resources, including compost collection infrastructure, reusable serviceware lending library, and partnerships with local recycling facilities. Train 50+ local vendors in zero-waste practices. Example: Portland, Oregon's zero-waste event program diverts 90% of event waste from landfills through mandatory composting and innovative material recovery. Create financial incentives for events achieving 80%+ waste diversion. Measurable outcome: Certify 30 zero-waste events annually by year three, divert 500 tons of waste from landfills, and establish Johnson City as a regional leader in sustainable event management. 4. DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION NETWORK FOR BUSINESS EVENTS: Expand the existing greenway system with dedicated connections between major hotels, event venues, and the airport, while implementing an electric shuttle service and bike-share program specifically for business travelers. Install EV charging stations at all major event facilities. Example: Copenhagen's integrated bike and public transit system serves 62% of conference attendees, reducing event-related emissions by 45%. Partner with Tri-Cities Airport for sustainable ground transportation options. Example: The Aspen Institute's sustainability programs generate $2.3 million in research funding while positioning Aspen as a thought leader, attracting high-value sustainable business events. Measurable outcome: Attract 10 sustainability-focused conferences annually, train 200 hospitality workers in sustainable practices, and publish 5 regional best-practice guides within 3 years, establishing Johnson City as the Appalachian center for sustainable business events.

Walkability

Johnson City scores 72/100 for Walkability and Urban Mobility. PEDESTRIAN INFRASTRUCTURE (23/30): The revitalized downtown district features well-maintained sidewalks, marked crosswalks, and ADA-compliant curb cuts connecting key venues, hotels, and dining establishments. Specific improvements include wider sidewalks along Main Street, pedestrian-activated crossing signals, and wayfinding signage between Carnegie Hotel, convention spaces, and Founders Park. Tree-lined streets enhance walkability. However, areas outside the central business district feature car-oriented infrastructure typical of mid-sized Southern cities, limiting the score. URBAN MOBILITY OPTIONS (12/25): No bike-sharing, scooter-sharing, or micro-mobility solutions are mentioned in the available information. The destination offers accessible shuttles and para-transit services for accessibility needs, but lacks modern shared mobility options that would enhance urban transportation flexibility for event attendees. CITY LAYOUT AND WALKABLE ZONES (20/25): Downtown Johnson City offers a compact walkable core where event attendees can navigate comfortably between venues without vehicle transportation. The downtown district, university area near East Tennessee State University, and main business corridors are well-connected. Founders Park and Main Street area create pedestrian-friendly gathering zones. Ongoing development efforts continue expanding pedestrian-friendly zones throughout the core tourism and business event areas. LOCAL TIPS FOR GETTING AROUND (17/20): Excellent wayfinding signage helps attendees navigate between key locations. The DMO works closely with event planners to provide guidance. The Convention & Visitors Bureau offers up-to-date information about navigation and area conditions. Clear delineation between walkable downtown core and areas requiring alternative transportation helps visitors plan accordingly.

How they're improving

IMPLEMENT MICRO-MOBILITY INFRASTRUCTURE: Launch a comprehensive bike-sharing and scooter-sharing program in the downtown core and between key event venues. Partner with providers like Zagster or Bird to establish 15-20 docking stations within a 2-mile radius of convention spaces, hotels, and attractions. Include dedicated bike lanes on Main Street and connecting corridors. Example: Chattanooga's Bike Chattanooga program increased downtown mobility by 40% within first year. Measurable outcome: Achieve 500+ monthly micro-mobility trips within 12 months of launch, reducing short-distance vehicle trips by 25%. 2. EXPAND PEDESTRIAN CONNECTIVITY BEYOND DOWNTOWN: Extend sidewalk networks and pedestrian infrastructure to connect downtown core with outlying hotels and attractions. Prioritize West Market Street and East Unaka Avenue corridors with continuous sidewalks, improved lighting, and clearly marked crosswalks every 300-400 feet. Install pedestrian refuge islands at wider intersections. Example: Greenville, SC's pedestrian master plan connected previously isolated areas, increasing foot traffic by 35%. Measurable outcome: Reduce pedestrian infrastructure gaps by 60% within 18 months, enabling safe walking routes to 90% of event-related properties. 3. DEVELOP DIGITAL WAYFINDING AND MOBILITY APP: Create a Johnson City Events mobility app featuring real-time walking directions, estimated walk times between venues, accessibility route options, and integration with available transportation services. Include augmented reality wayfinding features and highlight pedestrian-friendly routes with points of interest. Example: Austin's Convention District app reduced attendee transportation confusion by 50%. Measurable outcome: Achieve 70% adoption rate among event attendees within first year, with 4+ star user rating. 4. ESTABLISH PEDESTRIAN PRIORITY ZONES: Designate and clearly mark expanded car-free or car-limited zones during major events, particularly along Main Street corridor. Implement temporary street closures or shared street designs that prioritize pedestrians while allowing limited vehicle access. Add distinctive pavement treatments, seating areas, and public art. Example: Asheville's Pack Square pedestrian priority zone increased downtown dwell time by 45 minutes per visitor. Measurable outcome: Create 4-6 blocks of enhanced pedestrian priority zones, increasing downtown foot traffic by 30% during events. 5. ENHANCE MULTI-MODAL TRANSPORTATION HUB: Develop a centralized mobility hub near convention spaces offering bike rentals, scooter access, shuttle pickup/dropoff, accessible para-transit coordination, and real-time transit information displays. Staff with mobility ambassadors during major events to assist with navigation and transportation options. Example: Portland's Transportation Management Association hubs reduced single-occupancy vehicle trips by 20%. Measurable outcome: Serve 1,000+ users monthly, with 85% satisfaction rating and 15% reduction in event-related parking demand within first year.

Inclusiveness

Johnson City, Tennessee receives an overall Inclusive and Accessible Business Tourism score of 78/100. This reflects strong foundational accessibility with room for enhancement in information services and comprehensive infrastructure coverage. ACCESSIBILITY OF PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE (20/25): Johnson City demonstrates solid physical accessibility standards with ADA-compliant venues including convention centers, hotels, and meeting spaces featuring wheelchair accessibility, accessible parking, elevators, and accessible restrooms. The downtown revitalization through Founders Park complex and streetscape improvements shows commitment to accessible design. The expansion of the Tri-Cities Airport and renovations to the Carnegie Hotel and conference center incorporate modern accessibility features. However, the text lacks specific details about sidewalk conditions, curb cuts throughout the city, or accessibility audits of historic venues like those in Jonesborough, preventing a higher score. INCLUSIVITY POLICIES AND PRACTICES (21/25): The destination excels in inclusive service delivery with accessible shuttles and para-transit services connecting venues and hotels. Hotels and venues accommodate various cultural, religious, and dietary requirements, demonstrating broad inclusivity. Properties provide assistive listening devices, visual aids, and can arrange sign language interpreters upon request. Hospitality providers receive accessibility awareness training, showing systematic commitment. The DMO's proactive approach in working with event planners to identify accessibility needs demonstrates strong policy implementation. Minor gaps exist in documentation of specific inclusive transportation schedules and comprehensive accessibility standards across all service providers. PROVISION OF INFORMATION AND SUPPORT SERVICES (18/25): Johnson City shows moderate performance in information accessibility. The DMO connects event planners with local resources and service providers for accessibility needs, demonstrating support infrastructure. However, the text provides no specific information about accessible website features, availability of materials in alternative formats, multilingual accessibility guides, or clear wayfinding signage throughout the destination. This represents a significant gap in proactive information dissemination that would help travelers plan independently. BUSINESS-FRIENDLY SERVICES FOR VISITORS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS (19/25): Conference facilities and business hotels demonstrate strong ADA compliance with accessible meeting spaces, assistive technologies, and trained staff. The expansion of medical facilities at East Tennessee State University and Ballad Health systems that host conferences suggests specialized accessibility for medical events. The fiber optic network infrastructure supports digital accessibility needs for business events. The Carnegie Hotel conference center and Founders Park event spaces provide accessible business environments. However, specific examples of accessible business centers, adaptive technology in conference rooms, or specialized services for business travelers with disabilities would strengthen this category.

How they're improving

Johnson City's primary improvement opportunity lies in enhancing information accessibility and comprehensive documentation of accessibility features to enable independent trip planning for business travelers with diverse needs. While the destination has strong physical infrastructure and inclusive services, better communication of these assets would significantly improve the visitor experience. RECOMMENDATIONS:

Develop a comprehensive digital accessibility hub on the destination website featuring detailed accessibility profiles for all venues, hotels, and attractions. This should include 360-degree virtual tours with accessibility features highlighted, downloadable accessibility guides in multiple formats (PDF, large print, audio), and an interactive accessibility map showing accessible routes, parking, restrooms, and transportation options. Example: Visit Phoenix created an accessibility microsite with filterable venue searches by specific accessibility features, resulting in a 35% increase in inquiries from accessible travel planners.
Implement a destination-wide accessibility certification program for businesses in the hospitality and events sector. Establish tiered certification levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) based on accessibility standards exceeding ADA minimums, with annual audits and public recognition. Provide training workshops and financial incentives for businesses to achieve higher certification levels. This creates accountability, drives continuous improvement, and gives planners confidence in venue selection. Similar programs in destinations like Seattle have increased accessible venue inventory by 40% within three years.
Conduct comprehensive sidewalk and public space accessibility audits throughout downtown Johnson City, the Founders Park area, and routes connecting major business venues. Create a multi-year capital improvement plan to address gaps in curb cuts, tactile paving, accessible pedestrian signals, and clear pathways. Prioritize routes between hotels, convention facilities, and the airport. Document improvements publicly to demonstrate commitment and track progress. Portland, Oregon's similar initiative improved pedestrian accessibility scores by 60% and increased business event bookings from accessibility-focused organizations.
Establish partnerships with specialized accessible transportation providers to offer guaranteed, bookable accessible transportation services for business events. Create a dedicated accessible transportation coordination service through the DMO that event planners can access during the planning phase. Provide real-time tracking, multiple vehicle options (wheelchair vans, vehicles with hearing loop systems), and trained drivers. Guarantee response times and availability during peak business event periods. This addresses the gap between having para-transit services and ensuring reliable, business-appropriate accessible transportation.
Develop accessible wayfinding and signage standards across all business districts and venues, incorporating tactile maps, braille signage, high-contrast visual elements, and digital wayfinding apps with accessibility features. Install accessible wayfinding kiosks at key locations including the airport, major hotels, and Founders Park. Ensure consistency in signage design and information architecture across the destination to reduce cognitive load for all travelers. Barcelona's accessible wayfinding system increased independent navigation by visitors with disabilities by 55% and received international recognition, enhancing the city's reputation as an accessible business destination.

The presence of East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine provides additional academic medical expertise and research capabilities. However, certain outskirt neighborhoods experience higher crime rates, particularly sections of West Market Street and East Unaka Avenue with historical property crime incidents. Standard urban precautions are advised for poorly lit areas after dark. Emergency Response Systems (19/25): Regular police presence is confirmed in key business and event areas, though specific response times and emergency service capabilities are not detailed in available information. Traveler Safety Information and Support (16/20): Local resources including law enforcement and Johnson City Convention & Visitors Bureau provide current safety information and guidance for event planners, demonstrating accessible support infrastructure for business travelers.

Partner with the Johnson City Convention & Visitors Bureau to create a mobile app or interactive web platform showing real-time safety information, well-lit pathways between hotels and venues, and vetted transportation options. Example: Similar to Atlanta's 'Safe City' initiative that provides visitors with neighborhood-specific safety ratings and recommended routes. Measurable outcome: Achieve 80% adoption rate among event attendees within 12 months and reduce property crime incidents involving business travelers by 25%. 2. 24/7 Business Traveler Medical Concierge Service: Establish a dedicated medical concierge program at Johnson City Medical Center specifically for business event attendees and international visitors, offering pre-arrival health consultations, appointment scheduling, and guaranteed priority access to specialists. Create rapid-response teams familiar with major venue locations and establish direct communication channels between event organizers and emergency services. Example: Las Vegas Convention Center's integrated security operations center that coordinates multiple emergency services. Measurable outcome: Reduce emergency response times to major venues by 30% and conduct quarterly joint training exercises with 100% participation from key stakeholders. 4. Proactive Safety Awareness Program: Implement a mandatory pre-arrival safety briefing system for all business event attendees, delivered via email and mobile app 48 hours before arrival, covering specific areas to avoid (West Market Street, East Unaka Avenue sections), emergency contact numbers, and best practices for urban safety. Partner with hotels to provide welcome packets with laminated safety cards and 24-hour security hotline access. Example: Singapore's visitor safety program that provides comprehensive pre-arrival information resulting in one of the lowest tourist crime rates globally. Measurable outcome: Achieve 90% engagement rate with safety materials and reduce incidents involving business travelers in identified high-risk areas by 40% within 18 months. 5. Enhanced Lighting and Surveillance Infrastructure: Invest in improved street lighting and security camera coverage along key corridors connecting downtown hotels, event venues, and the East Tennessee State University area, particularly focusing on previously identified problem areas. Establish a monitored surveillance network with direct feeds to police dispatch for rapid incident response. Example: Baltimore's Downtown Partnership lighting improvement project that reduced street crime by 35% in targeted corridors.
