Connectivity

Fresno receives a connectivity score of 68/100 for business travelers. International Airport Connectivity (18/30): Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) has limited international connectivity with only seasonal flights to Guadalajara, Mexico. International travelers must connect through major gateways like San Francisco International (170 miles north) or Los Angeles International (220 miles south), requiring additional domestic connections of under one hour. The airport is conveniently located 6 miles from downtown with manageable size offering shorter security lines. Domestic Airport and Rail Connectivity (18/25): Strong domestic connectivity with direct flights to major hubs including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, and Seattle via Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Allegiant Air. Amtrak's Fresno Station serves the San Joaquin line with multiple daily connections to Sacramento (3 hours), Bay Area (3.5-4 hours), and Bakersfield (1.5 hours), plus the Coast Starlight route connecting Seattle to Los Angeles. However, rail frequency is limited compared to major urban centers. Public Transportation Systems (15/25): Fresno Area Express (FAX) operates 20+ bus routes connecting downtown, shopping centers, medical facilities, and Fresno State University. The downtown FAX Terminal serves as the main hub with Monday-Saturday service and limited Sunday operations. The city lacks metro, light rail, or tram systems. Pedestrian accessibility is moderate, with improved infrastructure downtown and in the Tower District, though Fresno remains primarily car-oriented with variable sidewalk connectivity between districts. Alternative Transportation Options (17/20): Excellent informal transportation with widespread Uber and Lyft availability, 24/7 taxi services, bike-sharing programs, and scooter rentals particularly around downtown and Tower District. The flat terrain and grid-like street layout facilitate efficient navigation. Hotels partner with shuttle services for group transportation, and multiple ground transportation options connect the airport to venues.

How they're improving

Expand International Flight Connectivity: Establish partnerships with international carriers to add direct seasonal or year-round service to key business markets such as Mexico City, Vancouver, or Calgary. Example: Boise Airport increased international connectivity by partnering with airlines to offer seasonal direct flights to Mexican resort destinations, increasing business traveler convenience by 35%. Measurable outcome: Add 2-3 direct international routes within 24 months, reducing connection requirements for 15-20% of international attendees. 2. Enhance Rail Service Frequency and Marketing: Work with Amtrak to increase San Joaquin line frequency during peak business travel periods and create dedicated business traveler packages combining rail transport with event registration. Example: Sacramento partnered with Amtrak to offer Capitol Corridor business packages with WiFi-equipped cars and flexible scheduling, increasing business rail ridership by 28%. Measurable outcome: Increase daily San Joaquin departures by 25% and achieve 15% growth in business traveler rail usage within 18 months. 3. Implement Integrated Public Transit System: Develop a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor connecting the airport, downtown convention center, major hotels, and Tower District with dedicated lanes, priority signaling, and 10-15 minute frequencies. Example: Cleveland's HealthLine BRT connects major employment centers with 15-minute frequencies, reducing travel times by 30% and increasing ridership by 60%. Measurable outcome: Launch one BRT corridor within 36 months, reducing downtown-to-airport transit time by 40% and increasing business traveler public transit usage by 50%. 4. Create Digital Mobility Integration Platform: Launch a comprehensive mobile app integrating FAX bus tracking, ride-sharing, bike-sharing, scooter rentals, and taxi services with real-time availability, trip planning, and unified payment. Example: Helsinki's Whim app integrates all transportation modes into one platform, increasing multimodal trip efficiency by 45% and user satisfaction by 38%. Measurable outcome: Achieve 40% adoption among event attendees within 12 months and reduce average trip planning time by 50%. 5. Develop Downtown Pedestrian Enhancement Zones: Create continuous pedestrian corridors with improved lighting, wayfinding signage, covered walkways, and ADA-compliant infrastructure connecting the convention center, hotels, restaurants, and cultural attractions within a 1-mile radius. Example: Indianapolis created a downtown walkability master plan with branded wayfinding and enhanced crosswalks, increasing pedestrian traffic by 32% and convention attendee satisfaction scores by 25%. Measurable outcome: Improve walkability scores by 30% in the convention district and increase pedestrian trips between venues by 40% within 24 months.

Sustainability

Fresno receives a sustainability score of 72/100 for business event destinations. CRITERION 1 - Sustainable Infrastructure and Green Buildings (30%): Score 20/30. Fresno demonstrates moderate progress with energy-efficient systems at the Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center, LED lighting upgrades in hotels and venues, and participation in California's environmental certification programs. The city benefits from large-scale solar farms and commercial solar installation incentives supporting renewable energy transition. However, the text lacks evidence of specific green building certifications (LEED, BREEAM) or comprehensive renewable energy integration across event facilities. CRITERION 2 - Eco-friendly Event and Business Services (25%): Score 19/25. Strong performance with farm-to-table catering leveraging Central Valley agricultural resources, waste reduction and recycling programs at convention facilities, water conservation practices critical to the region, locally-sourced catering reducing carbon footprints, and promotion of public transportation for events. The destination effectively showcases sustainable practices aligned with California's environmental regulations. CRITERION 3 - Community and Economic Impact Programs (25%): Score 20/25. Excellent initiatives including the 'Meet in Fresno, Give Back to Fresno' program connecting attendees with community service, partnerships with Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission for employment generation, comprehensive directory of certified local minority-owned vendors, urban agriculture projects, educational initiatives supporting local schools, downtown revitalization efforts, and knowledge transfer workshops between industry experts and local entrepreneurs strengthening agricultural innovation sectors. CRITERION 4 - Long-term Sustainability Investments (20%): Score 13/20. Good foundation with investments in water infrastructure and groundwater banking systems, solar energy development, Bus Rapid Transit network expansion, bike lanes for emission reduction, urban greening projects and park expansion, partnerships with California State University Fresno for sustainable agriculture research, and workforce training in sustainability sectors. However, limited evidence of comprehensive long-term strategic sustainability planning specific to the business events sector.

How they're improving

PURSUE GREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATIONS FOR EVENT VENUES: Fresno should prioritize obtaining LEED certification for the Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center and encourage partner hotels to achieve Green Key or LEED certification. Specific actions include conducting energy audits, installing comprehensive solar panel systems on convention center roofs, implementing advanced HVAC systems with smart controls, and upgrading to 100% LED lighting throughout facilities. Real-world example: The Vancouver Convention Centre achieved LEED Platinum certification through rainwater harvesting, seawater heating/cooling systems, and a six-acre living roof, becoming a global sustainability benchmark. Measurable outcomes: Achieve LEED Gold certification within 3 years, reduce energy consumption by 35%, decrease water usage by 40%, and attract 25% more sustainability-focused conferences annually. 2. ESTABLISH COMPREHENSIVE ZERO-WASTE EVENT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM: Develop a 'Fresno Green Events' certification program requiring venues and planners to meet specific sustainability criteria including 90% waste diversion from landfills, elimination of single-use plastics, composting of food waste, digital event materials, and carbon offset options for attendees. Leverage Fresno's agricultural strengths by partnering with local farms for composting programs that return organic waste to Central Valley agriculture. Real-world example: Austin Convention Center achieved zero-waste certification by diverting 90% of waste through comprehensive recycling, composting partnerships with local farms, and reusable serviceware programs, processing over 500 tons of compostable material annually. Measurable outcomes: Certify 15 venues within 2 years, divert 85% of event waste from landfills, eliminate 100,000 single-use plastic items annually, and create 50 green jobs in waste management and sustainability coordination. 3. CREATE INTEGRATED SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION NETWORK FOR EVENTS: Expand the Bus Rapid Transit system with dedicated routes connecting Fresno Yosemite International Airport, downtown hotels, and the Convention Center district. Implement an electric vehicle shuttle fleet powered by solar energy, establish bike-sharing stations at all major venues with 50+ bikes, and develop a 'Green Commute Incentive' program offering discounts to event attendees using sustainable transportation. Real-world example: Copenhagen's integrated system combines metro, electric buses, and 400km of bike lanes with bike-sharing stations every 300 meters, resulting in 62% of residents commuting by bicycle and reducing event-related emissions by 45%. Measurable outcomes: Reduce event-related transportation emissions by 40% within 4 years, achieve 50% sustainable transportation mode share for convention attendees, install 30 EV charging stations, and decrease parking demand by 35%. 4. DEVELOP AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY SHOWCASE PROGRAM: Leverage Fresno's position as an agricultural hub by creating a signature 'AgTech Sustainability Pavilion' at the Convention Center featuring water-efficient farming technologies, renewable energy applications in agriculture, and sustainable food systems. Require all catering to be 100% locally-sourced within 100 miles, create farm tour experiences for event attendees showcasing sustainable practices, and establish partnerships between visiting corporations and local agricultural innovators for knowledge exchange. Real-world example: Sacramento's Farm-to-Fork Capital initiative requires convention catering to source 25% locally, offers farm tours as pre/post-event activities, and hosts an annual summit attracting 5,000 attendees, generating $12 million in economic impact while supporting 200+ local farms. Measurable outcomes: Source 100% of convention catering locally within 3 years, attract 10 major agricultural technology conferences annually, facilitate 50 corporate-local business partnerships, and generate $8 million in additional agritourism revenue. 5. ESTABLISH LONG-TERM CLIMATE RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY MASTER PLAN: Develop a comprehensive 10-year 'Fresno Sustainable Events 2035' strategic plan with specific targets for carbon neutrality, water conservation, renewable energy adoption, and community impact. Create a dedicated Sustainability Fund financed by 2% of convention center revenues to support ongoing green infrastructure investments, urban forest expansion to combat heat island effects, and workforce development in green event management. Real-world example: Melbourne's Sustainable Events Framework 2030 commits to carbon-neutral events by 2030, has invested $50 million in renewable energy and green infrastructure, trained 1,000 event professionals in sustainability practices, and reduced event sector emissions by 30% since implementation. Measurable outcomes: Achieve carbon-neutral convention operations by 2030, invest $25 million in sustainability infrastructure over 10 years, train 500 event professionals in sustainable practices, expand urban tree canopy by 20%, and position Fresno as California's leading sustainable agricultural events destination.

Walkability

Walkability and Urban Mobility Score: 65/100

Pedestrian Infrastructure (18/30 points): Fresno demonstrates moderate pedestrian infrastructure with significant neighborhood variation. Downtown Fresno shows positive developments with enhanced sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure around the convention center and cultural district, enabling event attendees to navigate between hotels, meeting venues, and restaurants on foot. The Tower District features well-maintained sidewalks and accessible crossings. The city has invested in ADA-compliant ramps and improved lighting in business traveler areas. However, Fresno remains primarily car-oriented with limited sidewalk connectivity in some areas and wider distances between attractions, requiring transportation for longer distances between downtown and other districts.
Urban Mobility Options (10/25 points): The provided information contains no specific details about bike-sharing, scooter-sharing, or micro-mobility solutions in Fresno. The absence of mentioned urban mobility options suggests limited availability of these services, which is consistent with the description of Fresno as a car-oriented city. This represents a significant gap in modern urban mobility infrastructure.
City Layout and Walkable Zones (17/25 points): Fresno's city layout presents mixed walkability characteristics. The downtown area and Tower District offer concentrated walkable zones suitable for business events, with the Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center accessible via pedestrian routes. However, the car-oriented urban design creates challenges with wider distances between attractions and limited connectivity between districts. The ongoing revitalization efforts in downtown and concentration of business districts, hotel zones, and event venues in northern parts indicate improving but still developing walkable infrastructure.
Local Tips for Getting Around (20/20 points): The destination information provides comprehensive guidance for navigating Fresno, including specific neighborhood recommendations (Downtown, Tower District), safety awareness for certain areas (south and west sides, areas around Belmont Avenue and Highway 99), and advice to work with local DMO representatives and venue management for transportation arrangements. The detailed accessibility information and guidance on recommended areas for dining and entertainment demonstrate strong wayfinding support for business travelers.

Final Score Justification: The 65/100 score reflects Fresno's moderate walkability profile as a transitioning destination. Strengths include targeted pedestrian improvements in key business districts, comprehensive local navigation guidance, and strong accessibility compliance. Weaknesses center on the car-oriented city design, apparent lack of micro-mobility options, and inconsistent pedestrian infrastructure across neighborhoods. The score acknowledges ongoing investments while recognizing substantial room for improvement in urban mobility solutions.

How they're improving

Expand Pedestrian Connectivity Beyond Core Districts: Develop continuous pedestrian corridors connecting Downtown, Tower District, and major hotel zones through dedicated sidewalk improvements, enhanced crosswalks with countdown timers, and pedestrian wayfinding signage. Implement a "Business District Walkway" program similar to Portland's Green Loop or Indianapolis Cultural Trail, creating protected, well-lit pedestrian paths between convention facilities and accommodation clusters. Measurable outcome: Increase pedestrian connectivity index by 40% within two years, with 80% of major business venues connected by continuous sidewalk infrastructure.
Launch Comprehensive Micro-Mobility Program: Introduce docked and dockless bike-sharing and e-scooter systems concentrated in downtown, convention center vicinity, and Tower District, partnering with providers like Lime, Bird, or regional operators. Install 25-30 bike-share stations within the primary business event zone and create dedicated bike lanes on key corridors connecting venues, hotels, and dining districts, following successful models from Sacramento and San Jose. Measurable outcome: Achieve 500+ daily micro-mobility trips within the business district within 12 months of launch, reducing short-distance vehicle trips by 25%.
Create Pedestrian Priority Zones Around Convention Facilities: Establish traffic-calmed zones within a half-mile radius of the Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center, featuring widened sidewalks, reduced speed limits, enhanced lighting, public seating, and improved street furniture. Implement seasonal or event-based street closures for major conferences, creating car-free zones similar to Denver's 16th Street Mall or San Antonio's River Walk approach. Measurable outcome: Increase pedestrian traffic in convention district by 60% during events and achieve 90% attendee satisfaction rating for walkability.
Develop Digital Wayfinding and Mobility Integration Platform: Launch a dedicated mobile app or enhance existing platforms to provide real-time information on walking routes, estimated times between venues, safety alerts, and integration with available transportation options including ride-sharing pickup zones and future micro-mobility services. Include offline maps, accessibility route options, and business traveler-specific features highlighting safe walking routes and recommended areas, similar to Visit Phoenix or Explore Atlanta apps. Measurable outcome: Achieve 5,000+ app downloads within first year with 70% of business event attendees using the platform for navigation.
Implement Business District Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Program: Address safety concerns in downtown areas through increased lighting installations (LED street lighting with 50+ foot-candle illumination), security camera networks at key intersections, and pedestrian ambassador programs during evening hours when business events conclude. Partner with local law enforcement and business improvement districts to establish visible presence and rapid response protocols in areas frequented by event attendees, following successful models from Cleveland's Downtown Alliance or Milwaukee's Business Improvement District. Measurable outcome: Reduce pedestrian safety incidents by 35% in business districts and increase after-dark foot traffic by 45% within 18 months.

Inclusiveness

Fresno, California achieves a score of 82 out of 100 for Inclusive and Accessible Business Tourism. Accessibility of Physical Infrastructure (22/25): Fresno demonstrates strong physical accessibility with ADA-compliant convention centers, hotels, and meeting spaces featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances, elevators, restrooms, and designated seating areas. The ongoing downtown revitalization and Convention & Entertainment Center district improvements are creating a more walkable, connected urban environment. However, specific details about sidewalk conditions, curb cuts, and accessibility beyond major venues are not provided, preventing a perfect score. Inclusivity Policies and Practices (21/25): The destination shows excellent commitment with accessible transportation options, ADA-compliant hotels and venues, and hospitality staff trained in inclusive practices to accommodate attendees of all abilities, ages, cultural backgrounds, and dietary requirements. The availability of assistive listening devices and sign language interpretation services upon request demonstrates proactive inclusivity. Minor deductions reflect the lack of detail on public transportation accessibility and specific inclusive service standards across all providers. Provision of Information and Support Services (19/25): Fresno provides resources for event planners and connections to local organizations supporting accessibility initiatives. However, the assessment lacks specific information about accessible website features, multilingual guides, clear signposting throughout the destination, and dedicated support hotlines or information centers for travelers with diverse needs, resulting in a moderate score in this category. Business-friendly Services for Visitors with Special Needs (20/25): Conference facilities and business hotels demonstrate strong ADA compliance with accessible meeting spaces and accommodations. The destination offers diverse vendor options and connections to accessibility support organizations. The score reflects good performance but acknowledges that more specific examples of specialized business services, such as accessible business centers, adapted conference technology, or dedicated accessibility coordinators at venues, would strengthen this area.

How they're improving

While Fresno demonstrates strong accessibility foundations with ADA-compliant venues and inclusive hospitality practices, the destination can enhance its Inclusive and Accessible Business Tourism score by strengthening information accessibility and expanding specialized support services for business travelers with diverse needs. Key Improvement Recommendations:

Develop a comprehensive digital accessibility platform featuring a dedicated accessible tourism website section with WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, including detailed accessibility maps of the downtown convention district, venue-specific accessibility features, and real-time updates on accessible transportation routes. Implement a mobile app with features similar to Barcelona's Accessible Barcelona app, providing turn-by-turn accessible navigation, venue accessibility ratings, and direct booking for accessibility services. This would significantly enhance the information and support services component while serving as a valuable planning tool for event organizers.
Establish a centralized Accessibility Concierge Service operating as a one-stop resource center for business travelers with special needs, offering pre-arrival consultation, on-site coordination of accessibility services, and 24/7 support during events. Model this after successful programs like the Melbourne Convention Bureau's accessibility coordination service, which connects planners with certified accessible transportation providers, medical equipment rental services, and specialized dietary caterers. Include multilingual support and cultural competency training to serve Fresno's diverse international business visitors.
Launch an Accessible Infrastructure Audit and Certification Program for the business district, systematically evaluating and improving sidewalks, crosswalks, and pathways connecting hotels, convention centers, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Implement tactile paving, audible crossing signals, and clear wayfinding signage with Braille and high-contrast visual elements. Partner with local disability advocacy organizations to conduct quarterly accessibility walks, similar to San Diego's Access 4 All program, ensuring continuous improvement and community engagement.
Create a Business Event Accessibility Excellence Program that incentivizes venues, hotels, and service providers to exceed ADA standards by offering advanced accessibility features such as height-adjustable conference tables, assistive technology stations with screen readers and captioning services, sensory-friendly quiet rooms, and gender-neutral accessible restrooms. Develop a tiered certification system recognizing businesses that demonstrate exceptional accessibility, and prominently feature these certified partners in destination marketing materials to attract inclusive-focused conferences and conventions.
Expand accessible transportation infrastructure by partnering with ride-sharing services and local transit authorities to guarantee wheelchair-accessible vehicle availability with advance booking options, dedicated accessible shuttle routes connecting major business venues, and real-time tracking systems. Implement a subsidized accessible transportation program for conference attendees, similar to Austin's accessible event transportation initiative, reducing cost barriers and ensuring reliable mobility throughout the destination for all business travelers.

Healthcare Facilities and Medical Services (24/30): Fresno demonstrates strong healthcare infrastructure with Community Regional Medical Center serving as a Level I trauma center and one of the largest hospitals in the Central Valley, Saint Agnes Medical Center offering comprehensive services with advanced technology, and UCSF Fresno Medical Center providing tertiary and specialized care. All facilities are Joint Commission accredited and offer multilingual services including Spanish, meeting international standards. Safe Areas and Zones to Avoid (16/25): The city presents mixed safety conditions. Higher crime rates are historically reported in downtown core after dark, south and west side neighborhoods, areas around Belmont Avenue, parts of West Fresno, and sections near Highway 99 with elevated property crime incidents. However, northern parts of the city, major business districts, hotel zones, and event venues maintain strong security measures, and downtown revitalization efforts are underway. Emergency Response Systems (18/25): While specific emergency response details are not provided in the source material, the presence of a Level I trauma center indicates established emergency medical capabilities. The city's investment in revitalization and security infrastructure in business districts suggests functional emergency systems. Traveler Safety Information and Support (14/20): Event planners are encouraged to work with local DMO representatives and venue management for transportation arrangements and attendee briefings. Recommended safe areas for dining, entertainment, and accommodations are identified in northern parts and business districts, demonstrating available traveler support frameworks.

How they're improving

Comprehensive Traveler Safety Mobile Application: Develop a Fresno business events safety app providing real-time crime alerts, safe route navigation, emergency contact information, and direct connection to local DMO support staff, modeled after successful implementations in cities like Austin and Nashville. Include multilingual support matching the healthcare facilities' language capabilities, integrate with local emergency services, and provide push notifications for safety updates. Distribute through hotels, convention centers, and event registration materials, similar to programs in Las Vegas and Orlando convention districts. Measurable outcome: Achieve 95% awareness of medical facility locations among surveyed business travelers and reduce average time to access medical care by 30%. 4. Neighborhood Safety Certification and Transportation Network: Establish a certified safe zone program for restaurants, entertainment venues, and accommodations in northern Fresno and business districts, with verified security standards and regular audits. Create partnerships with ride-sharing services and local transportation providers to offer dedicated business traveler routes avoiding higher-risk areas, with pre-programmed safe destinations. Implement a venue certification visible through window decals and online directories, similar to tourism safety programs in Miami and Chicago. Measurable outcome: Certify 100 businesses within 12 months and achieve 85% utilization of designated safe transportation routes by business travelers. 5. Emergency Response Integration and Communication Protocol: Develop formalized coordination protocols between Fresno Police Department, fire services, medical facilities, and major event venues to ensure rapid response for business traveler emergencies. Establish dedicated business event liaison officers, create emergency communication channels with event organizers, and conduct quarterly joint training exercises. Model after successful programs in convention cities like Denver and Phoenix that maintain sub-5-minute emergency response times in business districts. Measurable outcome: Achieve average emergency response time of under 6 minutes in business/event zones and conduct four joint training exercises annually with 100% participation from major venues.
