Pursue Green Building Certifications and Renewable Energy Integration Council Bluffs should prioritize obtaining LEED certification for the Mid-America Center and other major event venues, similar to the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines which achieved LEED Silver certification. Install solar panel arrays on convention facilities and public buildings, following the example of the Coralville Marriott Hotel & Conference Center which integrated renewable energy systems. Implement a destination-wide renewable energy goal of 30% by 2030. Expected outcomes: Enhanced marketability to sustainability-focused corporate clients, 20-25% reduction in venue operational costs, and positioning as Iowa's leading green meetings destination. Measurable metrics include certification achievements, percentage of renewable energy usage, and carbon emission reductions.
Develop Comprehensive Sustainable Event Certification Program Create a "Green Meetings Council Bluffs" certification program for local venues, hotels, and service providers, modeled after the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC) standards. Require participating venues to demonstrate waste diversion rates of 75%+, eliminate single-use plastics, source 50% of catering from within 150 miles, and provide carbon footprint reporting for events. Partner with local farms and producers to establish a "Farm-to-Meeting" program showcasing regional sustainable cuisine. Expected outcomes: Differentiation in the competitive Midwest meetings market, attraction of environmentally conscious corporate clients, and support for local agricultural economy. Track certifications earned, waste diversion percentages, local sourcing dollars, and client satisfaction scores.
Establish Measurable Community Impact Dashboard and Social Sustainability Programs Develop a transparent online dashboard tracking economic and social impacts of business events, including jobs created, local business revenue, workforce training participants, and community volunteer hours. Launch a "Business Events Give Back" program requiring or incentivizing events to include community service components, similar to successful programs in Austin and Portland. Model this after successful plans in Vancouver (greenest city initiative) and Copenhagen (carbon neutral goals). Secure funding for a full-time Sustainability Coordinator position. Expected outcomes: Clear roadmap for sustainable development, enhanced credibility with corporate ESG-focused clients, attraction of sustainability-focused conferences and associations. Track progress through annual sustainability reports, third-party audits, and achievement of interim targets.
Enhance Sustainable Transportation and Carbon Offset Options Implement an electric vehicle charging network at all major venues and hotels, partnering with utility providers for installation. Develop a bike-share program connecting hotels, convention facilities, and downtown attractions, leveraging the existing trail system.
