While Cancún demonstrates a solid foundation in accessibility with a score of 76/100, the main improvement area is establishing consistent, destination-wide accessibility standards rather than property-by-property variations that currently require advance communication and verification. To elevate Cancún to an outstanding accessible business tourism destination, the following actionable recommendations should be implemented: Implement a Destination-Wide Accessibility Certification Program: Establish a mandatory accessibility certification system for all hotels, venues, restaurants, and attractions serving the business events sector, similar to Barcelona's Accessible Tourism certification or the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification used in Vancouver. This program should set minimum standards for physical infrastructure including doorway widths, elevator dimensions, accessible restroom facilities, and emergency evacuation procedures. Create a tiered certification system (bronze, silver, gold) that incentivizes properties to exceed minimum requirements, with certified venues featured prominently in DMO marketing materials and event planning resources. This would eliminate the current need for planners to verify accessibility on a case-by-case basis and ensure consistent standards across the destination. Develop Comprehensive Accessible Infrastructure Beyond the Hotel Zone: Extend the accessibility improvements demonstrated in the Hotel Zone throughout downtown Cancún and connecting areas by conducting a comprehensive accessibility audit of public spaces, sidewalks, and transportation routes. Implement a multi-year infrastructure improvement plan focusing on continuous accessible pathways from hotels to convention centers, restaurants, and attractions, including curb cuts, tactile paving for visually impaired travelers, and well-maintained sidewalks with adequate width for wheelchair users. Partner with the Tren Maya railway project to ensure all new stations and connecting transportation include universal design principles. Melbourne, Australia provides an excellent model with its Accessible Public Realm Guidelines that could be adapted for Cancún's context. Launch a Digital Accessibility Information Hub: Create a centralized, WCAG 2.1 compliant digital platform that provides detailed, verified accessibility information for all business tourism facilities, including 360-degree virtual tours of accessible features, detailed specifications of room and venue accessibility, and real-time availability of accessibility services. This platform should include an interactive map showing accessible routes between key business tourism locations, filterable search functions for specific accessibility needs, and direct booking capabilities for accessible transportation and services. Singapore's Accessible Tourism Hub provides a strong reference model. Include downloadable accessibility guides in multiple formats and languages, and ensure all information is regularly updated through a partnership verification system with participating properties. Establish Proactive Accessibility Concierge Services: Move from the current reactive approach of providing services upon request to a proactive model by creating dedicated accessibility concierge teams at the airport, convention center, and major hotels. Train these specialists extensively on disability awareness, assistive technology, and local accessible resources, similar to the accessibility concierge programs implemented by destinations like Dubai and Las Vegas. These concierges should conduct pre-arrival consultations with event organizers and individual travelers with accessibility needs, arrange all necessary accommodations and equipment in advance, and provide on-site support throughout events. Implement a feedback system that captures accessibility experiences and drives continuous improvement, with quarterly reports shared with the DMO and hospitality partners to identify and address gaps systematically.
