Walkability

Bakersfield receives a walkability score of 62/100 based on the following criteria assessment:

Pedestrian Infrastructure (18/30 points): Downtown Bakersfield demonstrates good pedestrian infrastructure with well-maintained sidewalks, marked crosswalks, and ADA-compliant curb ramps around the Rabobank Convention Center and Arts District. The flat terrain supports mobility for all abilities. However, infrastructure quality diminishes significantly outside the central core, limiting overall walkability. The automobile-oriented development pattern typical of Central Valley cities constrains pedestrian connectivity across the broader metropolitan area.

Urban Mobility Options (10/25 points): The provided information contains no mention of bike-sharing programs, scooter-sharing services, or micro-mobility solutions in Bakersfield. This absence of modern urban mobility alternatives significantly impacts the score, as attendees must rely primarily on personal vehicles, rental cars, or shuttle services for transportation beyond downtown.

City Layout and Walkable Zones (16/25 points): Downtown Bakersfield offers concentrated walkable zones around Wall Street, the Arts District, and convention venues with pedestrian-friendly streets. However, the spread-out development pattern requires vehicular transportation between most hotels, restaurants, and attractions. The city's layout reflects typical suburban sprawl, with key locations too dispersed for practical walking between venues and accommodations.

Local Tips for Getting Around (18/20 points): The destination provides clear guidance on navigating the city, with recommendations to coordinate with DMO representatives and venue management for transportation routes. Information about safe areas, downtown walkability, and the need for shuttle services demonstrates good local knowledge sharing. The acknowledgment of climate considerations for walking comfort shows practical awareness.

Final Assessment: Bakersfield's walkability is concentrated in downtown areas with good basic infrastructure but lacks the comprehensive pedestrian network and modern mobility options needed for a higher score.

How they're improving

Implement Comprehensive Micro-Mobility Program: Launch a city-wide bike-sharing and e-scooter program with stations at all major hotels, the Rabobank Convention Center, downtown attractions, and key business districts. Partner with providers like Lime, Bird, or Spin to deploy 500-750 units initially, with dedicated bike lanes connecting convention areas to hotel clusters. Example: Des Moines, Iowa implemented a similar program that increased alternative transportation usage by 40% among convention attendees. Measurable outcome: Achieve 25% of event attendees using micro-mobility options within 18 months, reducing shuttle service demand and carbon footprint.
Expand Pedestrian Infrastructure Beyond Downtown Core: Develop continuous sidewalk networks and protected pedestrian pathways connecting the convention center to hotel zones in southwest and northwest Bakersfield, prioritizing the most-traveled routes. Install enhanced crosswalks with countdown timers, improved lighting, and wayfinding signage every 2-3 blocks. Example: Fresno, California (similar Central Valley city) created pedestrian corridors that increased walking trips by 35% in targeted zones. Measurable outcome: Increase walkable radius from convention center from 0.5 miles to 1.5 miles, enabling 60% of nearby hotels to be accessible on foot.
Create Digital Wayfinding and Mobility App: Develop a Bakersfield Events mobility app providing real-time information on walking routes, estimated times, safety ratings, shuttle schedules, and integration with ride-sharing services. Include indoor navigation for major venues, accessibility features, and gamification elements rewarding sustainable transportation choices. Example: Austin Convention Center's app increased attendee satisfaction with transportation by 45%. Measurable outcome: Achieve 70% app adoption among event attendees and reduce transportation-related inquiries to event staff by 50%.
Establish Dedicated Event Transportation Corridors: Create clearly marked, well-lit pedestrian and cycling routes between the convention center, downtown hotels, and entertainment districts with distinctive pavement markings, public art, and enhanced security presence during event hours. Install emergency call boxes every 500 feet and real-time safety monitoring. Example: Sacramento's Capitol Mall corridor approach increased evening pedestrian traffic by 60% while reducing safety incidents. Measurable outcome: Increase after-dark pedestrian activity in designated corridors by 40% while maintaining zero safety incidents.
Develop Hotel Cluster Walkability Zones: Work with hotels in southwest and northwest districts to create mini walkable zones with improved sidewalks, pedestrian plazas, and shared shuttle hubs connecting to downtown. Incentivize restaurants and services to locate near hotel clusters, reducing the need for long-distance transportation. Example: Ontario, California created hotel district walkability improvements that increased guest satisfaction scores by 30%. Measurable outcome: Enable 80% of hotel guests to access dining and basic services within a 10-minute walk, reducing vehicle trips by 35% for short-distance needs.

Inclusiveness

Bakersfield achieves a score of 82/100 for Inclusive and Accessible Business Tourism. Accessibility of Physical Infrastructure (22/25): Bakersfield demonstrates excellent physical accessibility with ADA-compliant venues throughout the city. The Bakersfield Convention Center and major hotels feature wheelchair-accessible entrances, elevators, restrooms, meeting spaces, and designated accessible parking. The city's flat terrain and modern infrastructure significantly ease navigation for attendees with mobility challenges. Recent infrastructure investments including the Centennial Corridor project and downtown revitalization further enhance accessibility. Minor points deducted for lack of specific detail about sidewalk conditions and public space accessibility beyond venue facilities. Inclusivity Policies and Practices (21/25): Strong performance with ADA compliance across venues, accommodation of service animals, and provision of assistive listening devices and visual aids. The hospitality community receives training in diversity awareness and cultural sensitivity. Inclusive catering options accommodate dietary restrictions, religious requirements, and food allergies. Points deducted for limited specific information about inclusive transportation options and accessibility features in attractions beyond business venues. Provision of Information and Support Services (19/25): The destination demonstrates commitment to ongoing enhancement of accessibility features across transportation, accommodations, and attractions. However, the text lacks specific examples of accessible websites, guides, signposting systems, or dedicated support services for travelers with diverse needs. This represents the weakest area, suggesting information accessibility could be more comprehensively developed and communicated. Business-friendly Services for Visitors with Special Needs (20/25): Excellent capability with event facilities experienced in working with planners to provide accommodations. The Convention Center and hotels are well-equipped with accessible meeting spaces and assistive technologies. The ongoing fiber-optic network improvements support connectivity needs. Minor deduction for lack of specific examples of specialized business services or dedicated support staff for travelers with accessibility requirements during conferences and meetings.

How they're improving

Based on the score of 82/100, Bakersfield's primary improvement area is enhancing the provision and communication of accessible information and support services for business travelers with diverse needs. While physical infrastructure is strong, the destination would benefit from more comprehensive and visible accessibility information systems. Key recommendations include:

Develop a dedicated accessibility portal on the Bakersfield Convention & Visitors Bureau website featuring detailed accessibility audits of venues, hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Include downloadable accessibility guides with specific information on entrance widths, elevator locations, accessible restroom facilities, and available assistive technologies. Model this after successful programs like Visit Seattle's detailed accessibility resource center, which provides venue-by-vehicle accessibility ratings and downloadable maps.
Implement a comprehensive wayfinding and signposting system throughout the downtown convention district using universal design principles. Install tactile paving at crosswalks, audio signals at major intersections, and high-contrast signage with Braille at key business venues. Pilot this initiative in the area surrounding the Bakersfield Convention Center, similar to the accessible wayfinding system implemented in San Antonio's convention district, which increased independent navigation for visitors with disabilities by 40%.
Establish an Accessible Business Events Concierge Service providing pre-arrival consultations, on-site support coordination, and real-time assistance for meeting planners and attendees with accessibility needs. This service should coordinate assistive technology rentals, accessible transportation arrangements, and specialized dietary accommodations. Launch this as a partnership between the Convention Center and major hotels, following the model of Orlando's accessible event support program that has become a competitive differentiator.
Expand accessible transportation options by partnering with ride-share services and local transit to guarantee availability of wheelchair-accessible vehicles for business travelers. Create a dedicated booking system for accessible airport transfers and publish clear information about accessible public transportation routes connecting hotels, the Convention Center, and Meadows Field Airport. Set a measurable goal of 100% accessible transportation availability within 15 minutes during business events.
Conduct annual accessibility audits of all business event infrastructure with input from disability advocacy organizations and publish results transparently. Use findings to create a rolling improvement plan addressing gaps in sidewalk conditions, building access points, and public spaces beyond primary venues. Establish an accessibility advisory committee including representatives from the business events community and travelers with lived experience of disability to guide ongoing enhancements.

Safety

Bakersfield receives a security score of 78/100 for business travelers. Healthcare Facilities and Medical Services (24/30): Bakersfield offers excellent healthcare infrastructure with Kern Medical Center (Level II Trauma Center), Memorial Hospital (Dignity Health network), and San Joaquin Community Hospital, all Joint Commission-accredited with 24/7 emergency services, multilingual support, HIPAA compliance, and CDC guideline adherence. These facilities provide state-of-the-art diagnostic technology and specialized medical professionals with proximity to major event spaces. Safe Areas and Zones to Avoid (18/25): The city presents mixed safety conditions. Main business districts, convention facilities, and hotel zones in southwest and northwest areas are generally safe and well-maintained. However, certain east side neighborhoods (particularly east of Highway 99) experience higher crime rates. Downtown areas undergoing revitalization have pockets of concern after dark, and Oildale to the north warrants extra caution. Major event venues and hotels maintain good security. Emergency Response Systems (20/25): While specific response time data is not provided, the presence of a Level II Trauma Center and multiple accredited hospitals with 24/7 emergency services indicates robust emergency medical response capability. The text does not detail police or fire department response metrics. Traveler Safety Information and Support (16/20): Event planners have access to safety information through local DMO representatives and venue management for current updates and transportation route recommendations, though comprehensive traveler assistance programs are not explicitly detailed.

How they're improving

Establish a Comprehensive Business Traveler Safety Portal: Create a dedicated online platform and mobile app providing real-time safety updates, interactive maps highlighting safe zones and areas requiring caution, verified transportation providers, and 24/7 multilingual support hotline. Example: Follow Singapore's model with their Safe Travel portal offering geolocation-based alerts. Measurable outcome: Achieve 80% traveler awareness within 12 months and reduce safety-related incidents by 25%. 2. Implement Enhanced Downtown Security Corridor Program: Deploy dedicated security patrols, improved lighting, and emergency call stations along routes connecting major hotels, convention facilities, and downtown venues, particularly during evening hours. Example: Similar to San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter security enhancement program with uniformed ambassadors. Measurable outcome: Increase after-dark foot traffic in downtown event areas by 30% and reduce reported incidents by 40% within 18 months. 3. Develop Medical Concierge Service for International Attendees: Partner with Kern Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, and San Joaquin Community Hospital to create a dedicated business traveler medical coordination service offering pre-event health consultations, insurance verification, prescription assistance, and expedited care access. Example: Model after Dubai's Medical Tourism Facilitator program. Measurable outcome: Achieve 95% satisfaction rating from international attendees requiring medical services and reduce average wait times by 50%. 4. Launch Zone-Specific Transportation Safety Partnership: Collaborate with ride-sharing services, taxi companies, and hotel shuttles to establish verified safe transportation routes with GPS tracking, driver background checks, and real-time monitoring for events. Provide event attendees with pre-approved transportation vouchers. Example: Similar to Austin's Safe Ride program during SXSW. Measurable outcome: Ensure 100% of event attendees use verified transportation services and achieve zero transportation-related safety incidents. 5. Create Proactive Safety Briefing Protocol for Event Planners: Mandate comprehensive pre-event safety orientations conducted by local law enforcement and DMO representatives, including area-specific guidance, emergency contact information, and cultural awareness training. Provide printed safety cards in multiple languages for all attendees. Example: Follow the International Association of Venue Managers safety briefing standards. Measurable outcome: Achieve 100% event planner participation in safety briefings and distribute safety information to 95% of attendees within first 6 months.

International air connectivity

Bakersfield is served by Meadows Field Airport (BFL), which primarily offers domestic flights to major U.S. hubs including Las Vegas, Denver, and Phoenix, with no direct international service. However, international event attendees benefit from excellent connectivity through nearby Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), located approximately 110 miles south, which offers extensive global flight routes and can be reached via a 2-hour drive or connecting flights. Alternatively, Fresno Yosemite International Airport, about 100 miles north, provides some international flights to Mexico and seasonal Canadian destinations. For seamless international access, most visitors utilize LAX's comprehensive network of direct flights from Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America, making Bakersfield accessible for global event attendees willing to arrange ground transportation or short connecting flights, with the added convenience of less congestion and competitive pricing at the local Meadows Field Airport for the final leg of their journey.

Domestic & regional flights

Bakersfield offers convenient domestic airport connectivity primarily through Meadows Field Airport (BFL), which is located just 10 minutes northwest of downtown and provides direct flights to major hubs including Las Vegas, Denver, and Phoenix through carriers such as Allegiant Air and United Airlines. While the airport itself is relatively modest in size, business event attendees benefit from its ease of navigation, short security wait times, and quick ground transportation access to hotels and venues throughout the city. For enhanced connectivity to additional domestic destinations, event planners and attendees can also utilize nearby Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), located approximately 110 miles south, or Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT), about 100 miles north, both offering extensive domestic flight networks and accessible via straightforward highway connections along Highway 99 and I-5. This multi-airport accessibility ensures that national travelers attending business events in Bakersfield can find convenient routing options from virtually any major U.S. city, with the added advantage of Meadows Field's proximity reducing local transfer times significantly.

Rail access

Bakersfield offers solid train connectivity through its downtown Amtrak station located at 601 Truxtun Avenue, which serves as a key transportation hub for the region. The station is served by the San Joaquin route, one of Amtrak's most popular corridors, providing multiple daily departures connecting Bakersfield to major California cities including Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Fresno, and the Bay Area (Oakland/San Francisco via bus connection). Additionally, the station offers connections to the Pacific Surfliner route through bus bridges, extending accessibility to Southern California destinations such as Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and San Diego. The centrally-located station provides convenient access to downtown hotels, the convention center, and local attractions, with taxi services, ride-sharing options, and public transit available for ground transportation. This rail connectivity makes Bakersfield an accessible destination for business events, particularly for attendees traveling from Northern and Central California without requiring air travel.

Public transport

Bakersfield offers public transportation primarily through Golden Empire Transit (GET), which operates a comprehensive network of bus routes throughout the city and surrounding areas in Kern County. The system features fixed-route buses serving major corridors, business districts, shopping centers, and residential neighborhoods, with most routes operating Monday through Saturday. GET also provides complementary paratransit services through GET-A-Lift for passengers with disabilities who cannot use the fixed-route system. While Bakersfield does not have metro, light rail, or tram systems, the bus network connects key destinations including the downtown convention center area, Meadows Field Airport, California State University Bakersfield, and major hotels. Real-time bus tracking, mobile ticketing, and route information are available through GET's website and mobile applications, making it convenient for event attendees and business visitors to navigate the city without requiring personal vehicles.

Taxi services and ride-sharing platforms like Uber and Lyft are readily available throughout the destination, providing on-demand transportation to hotels, venues, and attractions. Additionally, many hotels and venues offer shuttle services for events and airport transfers, while car rental services are abundant for those preferring independent mobility. The city's grid-like street layout makes navigation straightforward for both drivers and cyclists, and during major events, temporary shuttle services are often arranged to facilitate movement between key locations, hotels, and the downtown area.

Getting around on foot

Bakersfield offers moderate pedestrian accessibility with varying conditions across different areas of the city. Downtown Bakersfield features the most walkable environment, with well-maintained sidewalks, marked crosswalks, and pedestrian-friendly streets around key business districts, convention venues like the Rabobank Convention Center, and entertainment areas along Wall Street and the Arts District. However, as a primarily automobile-oriented city, Bakersfield's overall walkability is limited outside the central core, with many hotels, restaurants, and attractions requiring vehicular transportation due to spread-out development patterns typical of California's Central Valley. Recent improvements include enhanced sidewalk infrastructure, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and designated pedestrian zones in downtown areas, though event planners should anticipate that attendees will likely need shuttle services or rental vehicles to navigate between venues, accommodations, and attractions across the broader metropolitan area. The mild climate for most of the year does support comfortable walking conditions when destinations are within reasonable proximity.

Good to know

Practical intel for planners

Destinaitor data

The on-the-ground details that shape an attendee experience and a risk assessment.

Business dress code

For business events in Bakersfield, California, attire recommendations should balance professional standards with the region's warm, agricultural heartland climate. The city experiences hot, dry summers (often exceeding 100°F) and mild winters, so lightweight, breathable fabrics are essential for comfort during warmer months. Business casual is generally acceptable for most local events, with men typically wearing dress slacks or khakis with collared shirts (ties optional except for formal occasions) and women opting for professional dresses, skirts, or pantsuits in lighter fabrics. For more formal corporate events, conferences, or evening functions, traditional business attire is appropriate, though jackets may be removed indoors due to the heat. Bakersfield's culture reflects its agricultural and oil industry roots with a practical, down-to-earth approach, so overly formal or flashy attire may seem out of place outside of high-level executive meetings. Layers are advisable year-round due to air-conditioned venues, and comfortable, polished footwear is recommended as some events may involve outdoor components or facility tours related to the region's primary industries.

Casual dress & local style

For casual dress in Bakersfield, California, visitors should opt for comfortable, practical clothing that suits the area's hot, dry climate and relaxed agricultural heritage. During the warm months (May through September), lightweight fabrics like cotton and breathable materials are essential, with shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and sandals being perfectly acceptable for most business events and casual meetings. The city embraces a distinctly informal, Western-influenced style reflective of its country music culture and farming roots, so jeans paired with boots or sneakers, casual button-down shirts, and light layers are appropriate year-round. Even for business-casual event settings, the dress code tends to be more relaxed than in major metropolitan areas, though it's wise to bring a light jacket or sweater for air-conditioned indoor venues and cooler winter evenings (December through February). Sun protection is crucial, so hats, sunglasses, and light, long-sleeved options are recommended for outdoor events, while avoiding overly formal or heavy clothing that would be uncomfortable in Bakersfield's frequently triple-digit summer temperatures.

Packing essentials

When traveling to Bakersfield, California for a business event, attendees should pack professional business attire including layers, as the city experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures often exceeding 95°F and mild winters that can be cooler in the mornings and evenings. Essential items include lightweight, breathable clothing for summer months, a light jacket or sweater for air-conditioned venues and cooler winter periods, comfortable walking shoes for navigating the convention center and local venues, sunscreen and sunglasses for sun protection, and standard business essentials such as laptops, chargers, business cards, and relevant meeting documents. Given Bakersfield's inland location in California's Central Valley, the climate is predominantly dry, so moisturizer and lip balm are recommended. Attendees should also bring valid photo identification, any necessary travel documents, prescription medications, and consider packing casual attire if planning to explore local attractions like the historic downtown area or nearby outdoor recreational areas. The city's straightforward layout and car-dependent infrastructure make comfortable shoes essential, and having a reusable water bottle is advisable to stay hydrated in the warm, arid climate.

Areas to avoid

Based on general safety considerations for Bakersfield, California, event planners should be aware that certain areas on the east side of the city, particularly some neighborhoods east of Highway 99, may experience higher crime rates and could be less suitable for evening events or unaccompanied visitor activities. The downtown area, while undergoing revitalization, can have pockets of concern particularly after dark, though major event venues and hotels in this zone are generally well-secured. Areas around Oildale to the north may also warrant extra caution for visitors unfamiliar with the region. However, it's important to note that Bakersfield's main business districts, convention facilities, and hotel zones in the southwest and northwest parts of the city are generally safe and well-maintained for business travelers and event attendees. Event planners should coordinate with local DMO representatives and venue management for current safety information and recommendations for transportation routes when planning group activities or suggesting accommodations.
