Connectivity

Almaty receives a connectivity score of 74/100 for business travelers. International Airport Connectivity (24/30): Almaty International Airport (ALA) is Kazakhstan's largest and busiest hub, located 15km from city center with 30-45 minute transfer times. The airport offers extensive direct flights to major business hubs including Dubai, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, and cities across Russia, China, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Air Astana and FlyArystan operate as key carriers. However, the absence of direct flights from the Americas (requiring one-stop connections through European/Middle Eastern hubs) limits the score. Modern terminal facilities and efficient immigration processes support business travel. Domestic Airport and Rail Connectivity (20/25): Excellent domestic air connectivity to all major Kazakh cities including Nur-Sultan, Shymkent, Aktau, Atyrau, Karaganda, Pavlodar, and Oral with frequent daily departures. Almaty-2 station provides rail connections to major cities across Kazakhstan (Astana, Shymkent, Aktobe) and international routes to Russia, Uzbekistan, and China, positioned on trans-continental corridors including links to the Trans-Siberian Railway. The centrally-located station is metro-accessible. Public Transportation Systems (18/25): The Almaty Metro (opened 2011) operates one line with nine stations connecting key downtown areas efficiently. Comprehensive bus and trolleybus networks cover all major districts with increasing English signage. However, the limited metro network (only one line) and variable infrastructure quality across neighborhoods reduce effectiveness. Winter conditions can impact service reliability. Alternative Transportation Options (12/20): Diverse options include Yandex. Taxi and InDrive ride-sharing platforms, traditional taxis, marshrutkas (shared minibuses), emerging bike-sharing in central areas, and private car hires. However, pedestrian infrastructure varies significantly, with some areas lacking proper sidewalks and crosswalks. Heavy traffic, driver behavior concerns, challenging winter conditions, and hilly terrain limit walkability between venues outside the core district.

How they're improving

Expand International Airport Route Network: Establish direct flight connections to North American business hubs (New York, Toronto, Los Angeles) and additional Asian markets (Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul) through airline partnerships or incentive programs. Example: Dubai successfully attracted Emirates to launch direct routes to 150+ destinations through airport fee reductions and marketing support, increasing business visitor arrivals by 35%. Measurable outcome: Achieve 3-5 new intercontinental direct routes within 24 months, reducing average connection time for Americas-origin travelers from 12+ hours to under 10 hours. 2. Extend Metro Network Coverage: Accelerate construction of additional metro lines connecting the airport, main railway stations, major business districts, and conference venues. Example: Istanbul's metro expansion from 2 to 8 lines (2010-2023) increased public transport usage by 60% and reduced business traveler transfer times by 40%. Measurable outcome: Complete at least one additional metro line within 36 months, connecting Almaty International Airport directly to the city center, reducing airport transfer time to 20 minutes and increasing metro coverage to 15+ stations. 3. Develop Integrated Digital Mobility Platform: Launch a unified mobile application integrating metro, bus, taxi, ride-sharing, and bike-sharing services with real-time information, journey planning, and cashless payment in multiple languages (English, Russian, Kazakh, Chinese). Example: Helsinki's Whim app integrated all transport modes, increasing multimodal trip efficiency by 45% and visitor satisfaction scores by 30%. Measurable outcome: Achieve 100,000+ downloads within 12 months and 40% adoption rate among international business visitors within 24 months. 4. Upgrade Pedestrian Infrastructure in Business Districts: Implement comprehensive pedestrian improvement program including widened sidewalks, accessible ramps, weather-protected walkways, improved crosswalks with pedestrian priority signals, and wayfinding signage in key business and event zones. Example: Copenhagen's pedestrian priority program increased walking trips by 25% and business district accessibility ratings from 65 to 88 over five years. Measurable outcome: Upgrade 25km of pedestrian infrastructure in central business districts within 18 months, achieving 85%+ walkability rating in core event areas and reducing pedestrian-vehicle conflicts by 50%. 5. Enhance Winter Transportation Resilience: Establish dedicated rapid-response snow removal protocols for public transport routes, pedestrian zones, and key business corridors, plus introduce heated bus shelters and covered walkways at major transit hubs. Example: Montreal's winter mobility strategy reduced weather-related transport delays by 60% and maintained 90%+ on-time performance year-round. Measurable outcome: Achieve 95%+ public transport reliability during winter months within 24 months and reduce weather-related accessibility complaints by 70%.

Sustainability

Almaty scores 72/100 on Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Business Travel. CRITERION 1 - Sustainable Infrastructure and Green Buildings (30%): Score 20/30. Walkability

Almaty receives a walkability score of 68/100 based on the following assessment:

Pedestrian Infrastructure (30%): 19/30 points Almaty's central districts feature Soviet-era wide sidewalks and organized street layouts in areas like Panfilov Park, Kok-Tobe, and Dostyk Avenue. The pedestrian zone Zhibek Zholy connects key landmarks and shopping areas. However, infrastructure quality varies significantly across neighborhoods, with some areas lacking proper sidewalks, adequate crosswalks, and accessible ramps. Winter conditions with heavy snow and ice impede movement, and drivers don't consistently yield to pedestrians. Major venues like Rixos Almaty and Ritz-Carlton have wheelchair accessibility, but coverage isn't comprehensive.
Urban Mobility Options (25%): 15/25 points No specific information about bike-sharing, scooter-sharing, or micro-mobility solutions was provided in the source material. Public transportation includes low-floor buses and some metro stations with elevators, though coverage is not comprehensive throughout the city. This indicates developing but incomplete micro-mobility infrastructure.
City Layout and Walkable Zones (25%): 18/25 points The city center features walkable zones with pedestrian streets connecting hotels, meetings, and landmarks. Core tourism and business districts (Bostandyk, Medeu, central business district) are walkable. However, the city's hilly terrain and sprawling layout make walking between distant venues challenging. Transportation arrangements are necessary for outer areas, indicating a moderately compact but geographically challenging layout.
Local Tips for Getting Around (20%): 16/20 points The destination provides clear guidance on walkable areas (Zhibek Zholy, Panfilov Park, Dostyk Avenue), safety considerations (traffic caution, areas to avoid after dark), and practical advice about staying within established commercial and hotel districts. Recommendations for transportation arrangements for outer venues demonstrate good local knowledge sharing.

Final Score: 68/100 - Almaty offers moderate walkability with strong pedestrian zones in central districts but faces challenges from inconsistent infrastructure quality, hilly terrain, winter conditions, and limited information on modern micro-mobility options.

How they're improving

Establish Pedestrian Priority Zones Around Event Venues Designate car-free zones during major events in central districts, with enhanced enforcement of pedestrian right-of-way at crossings. Implement traffic calming measures (raised crosswalks, reduced speed limits) in business districts. Provide training for drivers on pedestrian priority. Example: Oslo's car-free city center initiative. Measurable outcome: Reduce pedestrian-vehicle conflicts by 50% in designated zones within two years, improving safety perception among international visitors.

Inclusiveness

Almaty receives an overall Inclusive and Accessible Business Tourism score of 72/100, reflecting progressive development with room for improvement. Accessibility of Physical Infrastructure (18/25): Almaty demonstrates moderate accessibility with specific strengths in newer developments. Major hotels like Rixos Almaty and Ritz-Carlton feature wheelchair accessibility, accessible restrooms, and designated parking. The Almaty Metro expansion includes some stations with elevators, and low-floor buses are being introduced. However, coverage is not comprehensive throughout the city, and older infrastructure lacks consistent accessibility features. The ongoing urban renewal and public space improvements show commitment, but gaps remain in sidewalk accessibility and building retrofits across the broader city. Inclusivity Policies and Practices (18/25): The destination shows growing awareness with tangible implementations. Public transportation improvements include low-floor buses, though metro elevator coverage is incomplete. International hotels and modern MICE facilities provide accessible meeting rooms and assistive listening systems upon request. Staff training for supporting delegates with diverse needs is evident at major venues. However, the need for advance communication of specific requirements indicates that standardized inclusive practices are not yet fully embedded across all service providers. Provision of Information and Support Services (17/25): Almaty provides basic information and support services, though not comprehensively. Major venues offer multilingual services, and international hotels demonstrate capability to accommodate dietary requirements for various cultural and medical needs. The advice that event planners should communicate specific requirements in advance suggests that proactive information dissemination and readily accessible guidance materials may be limited. Digital infrastructure improvements support communication, but dedicated accessibility information platforms and comprehensive signposting appear underdeveloped. Business-friendly Services for Visitors with Special Needs (19/25): Business-related facilities show the strongest performance. Newer MICE facilities, the Almaty Financial District development, and international-standard hotels like Rixos Almaty and Ritz-Carlton demonstrate commitment to accessibility with wheelchair-accessible meeting rooms, assistive listening systems, and trained staff. Modern convention centers emerging in the city center are being built with accessibility considerations. However, the ongoing nature of development means not all business venues meet consistent international standards, and older facilities may lack comprehensive accommodations.

How they're improving

Almaty's score of 72/100 indicates a destination making progressive strides in accessibility and inclusivity, with particular strengths in newer business facilities, but requiring systematic improvements in physical infrastructure coverage, standardized inclusive practices, and comprehensive information accessibility to reach international excellence standards. Key Improvement Recommendations: 1. Expand Comprehensive Physical Infrastructure Accessibility: Implement a city-wide accessibility audit and retrofitting program targeting sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and public buildings in key business districts and routes connecting major venues. Model this initiative on Barcelona's 'Accessible Barcelona' program, which systematically improved 80% of city center sidewalks with tactile paving, curb cuts, and obstacle-free pathways within five years. Prioritize routes between the Almaty Financial District, major hotels (Rixos, Ritz-Carlton), convention centers, and metro stations. Establish measurable targets such as achieving 90% accessible sidewalk coverage in business zones within three years, creating continuous accessible pathways that enable independent mobility for wheelchair users and travelers with visual impairments. 2. Standardize and Certify Inclusive Transportation and Accommodation Services: Develop a destination-wide accessibility certification program for hotels, venues, and transportation providers, modeled on Singapore's 'Accessibility Mark' scheme. Accelerate the metro elevator installation program to achieve 100% coverage of stations serving business districts and major venues within two years. Expand the low-floor bus fleet to cover all routes connecting business areas, airports, and hotels. Create partnerships with ride-sharing services to guarantee availability of wheelchair-accessible vehicles with advance booking. Establish minimum accessibility standards for all MICE-designated hotels and venues, including trained staff, accessible rooms exceeding 5% of inventory, visual fire alarms, and assistive listening systems as standard rather than upon request. This standardization will eliminate the current need for advance communication of requirements and ensure consistent experiences. 3. Develop Comprehensive Digital and Physical Information Accessibility Platforms: Launch a dedicated multilingual accessibility portal (web and mobile app) providing detailed, verified information on accessible routes, transportation options, venue facilities, medical services, and equipment rental for business travelers with diverse needs. Model this on Vienna's 'AccessibleVienna' platform, which provides real-time information, 360-degree virtual venue tours with accessibility features highlighted, and user reviews. Implement comprehensive wayfinding signposting throughout the city using international accessibility symbols, tactile maps at major venues and transport hubs, and audio guidance systems at key business locations. Partner with major event organizers to require accessibility information in all event materials and venue websites, with standardized accessibility statements following international best practices. 4. Establish a Business Events Accessibility Excellence Program: Create a specialized support service for business event organizers, offering pre-event accessibility consultations, on-site accessibility coordinators for major conferences, and a centralized equipment loan program (wheelchairs, hearing loops, assistive technology) available at major venues and hotels. Develop this as a public-private partnership involving the Almaty Convention Bureau, major venues, and disability advocacy organizations. Implement mandatory accessibility training for all staff at MICE-designated facilities, covering disability awareness, communication techniques, and emergency procedures. Launch an annual 'Accessible Business Events Award' recognizing venues and organizers demonstrating excellence, creating competitive incentives for continuous improvement. Pilot this program with 10 major venues in year one, expanding to all designated MICE facilities by year three, with the goal of positioning Almaty as Central Asia's most accessible business events destination. 5. Accelerate Accessibility Integration in New Developments: Mandate universal design principles in all new infrastructure projects, particularly the ongoing Almaty Financial District development, new convention centers, and metro expansions. Require accessibility impact assessments and compliance with international standards (UN CRPD, ISO 21542) before project approval. Establish an accessibility advisory committee including people with disabilities to review major development plans. This proactive approach, similar to Tokyo's preparations for accessible Olympics legacy, ensures that new infrastructure is accessible from inception rather than requiring costly retrofitting, and creates showcase examples of best practice that can influence broader citywide improvements.

Safety

Almaty receives a safety and security score of 76/100 for business travelers. Healthcare Facilities and Medical Services (24/30): Almaty demonstrates strong medical infrastructure with JCI-accredited International Hospital Almaty, Central Clinical Hospital, and Interteach Medical Center offering Western-standard care with English-speaking staff and modern diagnostic technology. These facilities provide comprehensive emergency and specialized services meeting international standards. Safe Areas and Zones to Avoid (18/25): The city center and main business districts (Bostandyk, Medeu, central business district) are well-policed and generally safe. However, caution is needed in outlying residential districts with inadequate lighting, northern industrial zones lacking amenities, poorly lit parks and underpasses at night, and crowded Green Bazaar area prone to petty theft. Mountainous peripheral areas require proper guidance. Emergency Response Systems (17/25): While the text indicates well-policed central areas, specific information about police, fire, and emergency services responsiveness is limited, suggesting adequate but not exceptional emergency response capabilities. Traveler Safety Information and Support (17/20): Clear identification of safe zones (commercial, hotel, tourist areas) and specific districts to avoid demonstrates good safety information availability. Medical facilities offer multilingual support staff, indicating strong traveler assistance infrastructure.

How they're improving

Enhanced Lighting and Infrastructure in Peripheral Areas: Install comprehensive LED street lighting systems in outlying residential districts and improve infrastructure in northern industrial zones. Example: Implement smart lighting networks similar to Copenhagen's adaptive street lighting that increases brightness when pedestrians are detected. Measurable outcome: Reduce nighttime incidents in peripheral areas by 40% within 18 months and achieve 95% street lighting coverage in previously underserved districts. 2. Integrated Emergency Response Mobile Application: Develop a dedicated business traveler safety app providing real-time emergency service access, GPS-enabled panic buttons, and direct connections to International Hospital Almaty and police services with multilingual support. Example: Model after Dubai's 'My Safe City' app offering instant emergency response and location sharing. Measurable outcome: Achieve 70% adoption rate among business travelers within 12 months and reduce emergency response times by 25%. 3. Business Traveler Safety Briefing Program: Establish mandatory safety orientation sessions at major hotels and convention centers, providing detailed maps of safe zones, 24/7 hotline access, and area-specific guidance. Partner with International Hospital Almaty to offer medical emergency cards. Example: Replicate Singapore's visitor safety program offering personalized safety briefings and emergency contact cards. Measurable outcome: Brief 85% of business event attendees within first year and achieve 90% traveler satisfaction rating for safety information. 4. Enhanced Security in High-Traffic Commercial Areas: Deploy additional security personnel and surveillance systems at Green Bazaar and other crowded tourist areas, with visible police presence and anti-theft awareness campaigns. Example: Implement Barcelona's tourist area security model with multilingual police officers and theft prevention signage. Measurable outcome: Reduce petty theft incidents by 50% within 24 months and increase visitor confidence ratings by 35%. 5. Mountain Safety and Guidance Infrastructure: Establish certified guide services, weather monitoring stations, and emergency rescue posts in peripheral mountainous areas with clear signage and communication systems. Example: Follow Swiss Alpine model with designated routes, emergency shelters, and real-time weather updates. Measurable outcome: Achieve zero serious incidents in guided mountain visits and establish 10 emergency response stations within 18 months.

The airport operates as a key hub for Air Astana and FlyArystan, providing convenient connections for event attendees traveling from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. While there are no direct flights from the Americas, convenient one-stop connections are available through major European and Middle Eastern hubs, making Almaty accessible for international business events and conferences. The airport continues to expand its route network and has undergone significant modernization to meet international standards, ensuring a smooth arrival experience for global event participants.

Domestic & regional flights

Almaty is served by Almaty International Airport (ALA), which functions as Kazakhstan's largest and busiest aviation hub, offering excellent domestic connectivity to major cities across the country. The airport provides regular domestic flights to key destinations including Nur-Sultan (Astana), Shymkent, Aktau, Atyrau, Karaganda, Pavlodar, and Oral, operated primarily by Air Astana, SCAT Airlines, and FlyArystan. Located approximately 15 kilometers northeast of the city center, the airport is easily accessible via taxi, bus services, and ride-sharing apps, with journey times typically ranging from 30-45 minutes depending on traffic conditions. The modern terminal infrastructure ensures smooth processing for domestic travelers, with frequent daily departures to most major Kazakh cities, making Almaty an ideal hub for event attendees traveling from across Kazakhstan. Additionally, the domestic airport connectivity continues to expand as Kazakhstan develops its aviation sector, with increasing flight frequencies and competitive pricing options that facilitate convenient travel for business event participants throughout the nation.

Rail access

Almaty's main railway hub, Almaty-2 station (formerly known as Almaty-Glavny), serves as the city's primary train station, offering connectivity to major cities across Kazakhstan including Astana (Nur-Sultan), Shymkent, and Aktobe, as well as international routes to Russia, Uzbekistan, and China. The station is conveniently located in the city center and is accessible via public transportation, including buses, trolleybuses, and the Almaty Metro (Almaty-2 metro station). Additionally, Almaty-1 station serves as a secondary rail terminal primarily for suburban and regional services. The city benefits from being positioned on key trans-continental rail corridors, including connections to the broader Central Asian rail network and links to the Trans-Siberian Railway, making it an accessible destination for both domestic business travelers and international event participants arriving by rail from neighboring countries and regions.

Public transport

Almaty offers a comprehensive public transportation system that includes an extensive network of buses, trolleybuses, and a modern metro system. The Almaty Metro, which opened in 2011, currently operates one line with nine stations connecting key areas of the city, providing a fast and efficient way to navigate the downtown core. The city's bus network covers all major districts and operates numerous routes throughout the day, with both traditional buses and electric trolleybuses serving residents and visitors. Additionally, Almaty has marshrutkas (shared minibuses) that follow fixed routes and offer a flexible, affordable alternative to regular buses, though they can be more crowded during peak hours. For event planners, it's worth noting that public transportation is generally affordable and reliable, with signs and announcements increasingly available in English alongside Kazakh and Russian, making it accessible for international visitors attending business events in the city.

Taxis & micromobility

In Almaty, Kazakhstan, informal transportation facilities are abundant and diverse, catering to both local commuters and international business event attendees. The city offers a robust taxi service network, with both traditional street-hailed taxis and modern ride-sharing platforms like Yandex. Taxi and InDrive being widely used and cost-effective options for navigating the city. Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) operate along fixed routes throughout Almaty, providing an economical though sometimes crowded alternative for shorter distances. Bike-sharing systems have emerged in recent years, particularly in central areas and parks, offering eco-friendly transportation during warmer months. Private car hires with drivers are readily available and popular among business travelers seeking more comfortable and flexible transportation between venues, hotels, and the airport. Additionally, informal taxi services can be arranged through hotels or directly with drivers, though it's recommended to agree on fares beforehand or use metered services to ensure transparency and fair pricing for event participants unfamiliar with the local market.

Getting around on foot

Almaty offers moderate pedestrian accessibility in its central districts, where Soviet-era urban planning created relatively wide sidewalks and organized street layouts, particularly in areas like Panfilov Park, Kok-Tobe, and along Dostyk Avenue. The city center features pedestrian zones such as Zhibek Zholy (the walking street), which connects key landmarks and shopping areas, making it convenient for business visitors to explore on foot between meetings and hotels. However, pedestrian infrastructure quality varies significantly across different neighborhoods, with some areas lacking proper sidewalks, adequate crosswalks, or accessible ramps for those with mobility challenges. The city's hilly terrain and sprawling layout can make walking between distant venues challenging, and winter conditions (heavy snow and ice) can further impede pedestrian movement. Traffic can be heavy and drivers don't always yield to pedestrians, so caution is advised at crossings. For business events, organizers should consider that while core tourism and business districts are walkable, transportation arrangements may be necessary for venues located in outer areas or when moving between different parts of the city.

Humidity levels remain relatively low throughout the year, typically ranging from 60-70% in summer to 70-80% in winter, contributing to comfortable conditions during the warmer months and crisp, dry cold in winter.

The peak season for business events typically runs from September to November and April to June, when the weather is most temperate and major international conferences, trade shows, and corporate events are scheduled. Practical intel for planners

Destinaitor data

The on-the-ground details that shape an attendee experience and a risk assessment.

Business dress code

For business events in Almaty, Kazakhstan, professional attire is essential as the city maintains formal business customs influenced by both Central Asian and Russian traditions. Men should wear well-tailored dark suits with conservative ties, while women should opt for elegant business suits, dresses with blazers, or formal separates that maintain modesty, keeping shoulders and knees covered to respect local cultural sensitivities. Almaty experiences distinct seasons with cold winters (often below -10°C) and warm summers (up to 30°C), so layering and weather-appropriate outerwear are crucial. Despite the continental climate, indoor venues are well-heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer, so standard business attire remains appropriate year-round. While international business standards are generally accepted, it's advisable to err on the side of formality, especially for first meetings and high-level events, avoiding overly casual clothing such as jeans or sneakers unless specifically indicated otherwise, as Kazakhstani business culture places significant emphasis on making a polished, respectful first impression.

Casual dress & local style

In Almaty, Kazakhstan, casual dress should balance comfort with cultural respect and adaptability to the city's continental climate. During the warmer months (May-September), lightweight, modest clothing is appropriate, with locals favoring smart-casual attire such as well-fitted jeans, trousers, blouses, polo shirts, and casual dresses that cover shoulders and knees, particularly when visiting religious sites or government buildings. For the cold winters (November-March), layered clothing is essential, including quality outerwear, warm boots, and thermal underlayers, as temperatures can drop significantly below freezing. Almaty residents generally dress more formally than their Western counterparts, even in casual settings, so visitors should avoid overly revealing clothing, beachwear-style outfits, or extremely distressed garments. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended year-round for exploring the city's hilly terrain. Overall, a polished, conservative casual style that leans slightly more formal than typical Western casual wear will help visitors blend in comfortably while respecting local cultural norms and climate considerations.

Packing essentials

When traveling to Almaty, Kazakhstan for a business event, attendees should pack appropriate business attire including both formal wear for meetings and smart casual options, while keeping in mind the continental climate with cold winters (November-March) requiring heavy coats, warm layers, and insulated footwear, and mild summers (June-August) suitable for lighter clothing. Essential documents include a valid passport with at least six months validity, visa (if required based on nationality), business invitation letters, travel insurance, and copies of all important documents stored separately. Personal items should include universal power adapters (Kazakhstan uses Type C and F plugs, 220V), any necessary medications with prescriptions, toiletries, and a basic first-aid kit. Given Almaty's altitude of approximately 800 meters above sea level and varying air quality, attendees might want to bring appropriate medications if sensitive to these conditions. For business purposes, pack all necessary presentation materials, business cards (preferably with Russian translation on the reverse), laptop and chargers, and consider bringing a portable Wi-Fi device or ensuring international roaming is activated. It's also advisable to bring some US dollars or Euros for exchange to local currency (Kazakhstani Tenge), as well as a phrasebook or translation app, since English is not widely spoken outside international business circles.

Areas to avoid

In Almaty, Kazakhstan, visitors and event planners should exercise caution in certain peripheral areas, particularly some outlying residential districts on the city's outskirts where infrastructure may be less developed and street lighting inadequate after dark. The industrial zones in the northern parts of the city are generally not recommended for casual visits, as they lack tourist amenities and can be poorly maintained. While Almaty's city center and main business districts are generally safe and well-policed, it's advisable to avoid poorly lit parks and underpasses during nighttime hours. The Green Bazaar area, while popular during the day, can be crowded and attract petty theft, so visitors should remain vigilant with their belongings. Additionally, some mountainous areas on the city's periphery should only be visited with proper guidance and preparation, as terrain can be challenging and weather conditions unpredictable. Overall, staying within well-established commercial, hotel, and tourist areas, particularly in districts like Bostandyk, Medeu, and the central business district, is recommended for business travelers and event attendees.
